This is a list of all the errors that the player may come across in Until Dawn, overlooked by developers and game testers, be it the original game and/or the remake.
Continuity/Logic Issues[]
- While inside the lodge, there are no lights on. However in every exterior shot of the lodge, all the interior lights appear to be on.
- In the original Prologue, the group discusses the prank in the kitchen while Beth is in the room as well, looking through the window. This is an odd choice, since Beth is not supposed to know about the prank. On top of that, Beth doesn't hear their conversation about the prank even though she's a few meters away. This has been fixed in the remake, where the prologue has been reframed.
- Throughout Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3, Jessica plays a song on her phone. In Chapter 4, right before Mike finds Jessica in the elevator, the song can faintly be heard, even though the phone was left in the guest cabin. This has been fixed in the remake.
- When Emily suggests finding help to Chris and Ashley in Chapter 4, Matt will agree with her if he hadn't looked through the telescope in Chapter 1. However, in the chapter recap, it will show Matt suggesting to find the others instead, even though it was not what he said. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- In Chapter 5, in a lower level of the Sanatorium that leads to a tunnel, Mike shoots open a gate which causes a barrel of flammable liquid to catch fire and burst into a small explosion. When he returns to this location later in Chapter 9, there is no evidence of the explosion.
- During Chapter 6, Ashley can miss the candle lighting up on its own by walking through other side of the room. However, she will still later mention the candle lighting up out of nowhere even if she didn't see that happen. Interestingly enough though, in the Chapter 7 flashbacks while Josh explains his plan, the scene of Ashley being scared by the candle will be replaced with a scene of the Psycho lighting up a candle in the end of Chapter 3 if Ashley missed the candle jumpscare.
- If Chris pointed the gun at himself first during the gun trap in Chapter 6, Ashley is not seen to be panicking, but if he then chose to shoot her and made it to the door in Chapter 8, a flashback will play out in Ashley's head depicting her panicking as if Chris had pointed the gun at her first. This has been fixed in the remake, where the death scene plays out entirely differently.
- Whether Chris decides to shoot himself, Ashley, or do nothing, the dialogue that Sam and Mike hear in Chapter 7 right before breaking in on them in the gun trap is always Chris saying he can't decide, and there is never a gunshot sound heard, indicating Chris had not shot.
- Chris also always shoots at the Psycho when he walks once the trap came to an end, and is surprised the gun has no effect and doesn't realize it contains blanks, even if he had chosen to shoot himself or Ashley.
- When the Psycho unmasks himself, he is wearing gloves in one shot, and none the next. The gloves are then gone for the rest of the game.
- Regardless of how many injuries Emily receives, the recaps will always show her completely unscathed. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- Even if Emily throws her torch in the gasoline when running from the Stranger, she will be seen trying to hide with the torch during the recap, despite not having one. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- Emily will not close the door after her and will be attacked by the Wendigo if she fails to shoot it with the flare gun in time. However, during the recap, she is always seen being bitten only after closing the door. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- Although in Chapter 3 Jessica is always pulled out of the window by her hair, Mike's flashback in Chapter 8 shows her being pulled out by her shoulders (which was the version of this scene from an earlier build of the PS4 game). This has been fixed in the remake.
- If Emily died in the mines in Chapter 8, the group can never learn from her that the cable car key is missing and that Josh had likely been taken by the Wendigo to the mines in its lair. The group simply knows all of this information without any explanation.
- If Chris died in Chapter 8, the group has no way of knowing Josh might still be tied up in the shed (or having run away elsewhere) and not captured by the Wendigo. The group simply assumes he isn't in the shed without confirmation, as they do the Stranger being dead. Game director Will Byles has also pointed out that, if Chris dies on his way back from the shed, the game doesn't make sense anymore.[1]
- If Mike fails the QTEs while fighting the Wendigos in Chapter 9, he'll get tackled and pinned down by one in a variety of sections of the Sanatorium that are far from the exit, ending the segment. But when Sam enters the Sanatorium to rescue Mike, she will find him struggling against a Wendigo right near the exit, with no explanation of how he got there after being caught by the Wendigo.
- If Ashley dies at the trapdoor, the group never goes back to check on her and instead continues their trek to the rock wall, with no one questioning Ashley's whereabouts. However, if Ashley doesn't die at the trapdoor, the group is seen going back through the tunnels in search for her and thus reunite with her, before continuing on until they reach the rock wall. The group never questions Ashley's (nor potentially Chris') fate/whereabouts upon arriving at the rock wall.
- If Ashley dies at the trapdoor, her hair is unexplainably scrunched up in a ponytail on her decapitated head, despite her wearing her hair loose up until her death. In the lair in Chapter 10, her hair is suddenly loose again.[2]
- If Sam enters the Sanatorium to save Mike in Chapter 9, her face, leg and hands will be bloodied once they get tossed from the Sanatorium explosion. Despite gaining these injuries if she met up with Mike in the Sanatorium, they will still invariably appear on Sam in Chapter 10 even if she met up with Mike in the mines instead.
- If Sam rescues Mike from the burning Wendigo in the mine, she decapitates it with a blunt instrument. However, in the recap, it shows the Wendigo falling over dead with its head still on. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- Upon entering the lair containing the bodies and heads of the deceased in Chapter 10, Mike and Sam will react as if multiple people were killed - using the plural bodies, even if the player managed to keep everyone alive. This has been fixed in the remake: if only the Stranger's body is there, Sam doesn't say there are bodies, Mike no longer gasps "Oh... Oh, my God...", and Sam no longer audibly gags and shouts in despair; and if there are less than 3 bodies hanging in lair, Mike's line about there being a lot of bodies is removed.
- Even if the other characters are dead by Chapter 10, Sam will still mention that she's climb out of the mine cave in order to go to tell 'the others' that she, Mike and Josh are alright while they retrace their steps through the mines, despite the fact that Sam and Mike had seen all their friends dead. Furthermore, Sam will then call out to others to let her in when she tries to enter the lodge.
- Once Mike and Sam get inside the lodge, Mike says they should check the basement for anyone who may still be down there, even if he and Sam had already seen all their friends are dead.
- In Chapter 10, if Ashley and/or Emily are still alive while Chris is dead, Mike will still have his animation of dodging Chris running out of the basement as if he is still alive.
- During the Wendigo confrontation in the lodge, Hannah throws one of the miners at the stairs, destroying them in the process. The debris can be seen as Hannah throws the miner towards the fireplace, but when she is about to rip his head off, the debris disappears. This has been fixed in the remake.
- If Mike died and Sam survived, she will still have the animation of Mike grabbing her arm when watching the lodge burn. This has been fixed in the remake.
- If Matt falls off the cliff in Chapter 6 and Emily survives until dawn, during the Credits she will either say that he left her to die (even though the fire tower scene with him never happened) or she will ask herself if he's dead (even though she had seen him die).
- If Matt had not died at the cliff and had chosen to save Emily at the fire tower, but their relationship wasn't high enough by the end of the game, Emily will still say Matt left her to die if she survives the night.
- If Emily was killed in the mines in Chapter 8, her body will erroneously not be shown in the post-credits scene in the lair if Josh becomes a Wendigo, despite her corpse appearing in Chapter 10.
- If Ashley was killed in Chapter 9, her body will erroneously be shown wearing her denim coat in the post-credits scene if Josh becomes a Wendigo, which Ashley hadn't worn since Chapter 2.
Factual Errors[]
- Despite having Beth's sweater and jacket, Hannah realistically would have succumbed to her injuries and/or hypothermia long before she was overcome with hunger.
- In Chapter 1, Chris' phone is buzzing as if he is receiving a phone call. Despite this, Sam can see that it's actually a text message from Ashley, who is already on the mountain where there, as mentioned later, should be no signal.
- Jessica is able to survive and wake up in the mines in Chapter 9 after the elevator she's laying on collapses to the bottom of the mineshaft at a high velocity, along with her severe traumatic injuries, and potentially not wearing her winter clothes, which is unrealistic.
- Power in the mines, the mining facility and the Sanatorium still works despite the locations being abandoned for more than 60 years. In modern times, the power companies would've rerouted electricity away from these locations making it impossible for doors, gates, conveyor belts and elevators to be functional.
- Even though the gun that the Psycho gives to Chris is loaded with blanks, it would still be very dangerous and possibly fatal if fired at close distance. Despite this, both Chris and Ashley remain unharmed even in Chris' case when he points the gun directly at his face.
- Despite Emily running away from the Stranger/Wendigo in Chapter 7/8, her torch still continues to burn relentlessly and only goes out when she throws it away.
- When Mike is running away from the Wendigos in the Sanatorium, he shoots a door lock open and pushes against the door. The opening would barely be enough for Mike's hand to fit through. Yet, if he has Wolfie with him, he is shown to walk towards the door and finds Mike later on. The space would be too tiny for Wolfie to fit through.
- In the Sanatorium, Mike shoots a double-barrel shotgun more than twice and doesn't need to reload afterwards.
- When Sam wades through the small pond to the lodge after she escapes the mines in Chapter 10, the blood that splattered on her legs should have faded in the water, yet it will still be exactly as it was before. Interestingly enough, neither Mike nor Sam show any symptoms of severe cold after wading through the ice cold water in the already freezing cold.
- Multiple characters throughout the game can fall from heights significant enough to cause noticeable injuries, yet are completely fine and unhurt following their landings.
Glitches/Bugs[]
- When Chris and Josh high-five in the basement, Josh's hand clips through the sleeve of Chris's robe.
- If Ashley walks close to the left in Chapter 6 in the basement, during the jumpscare of the flying object, she will walk through the pillar in front of her. This has been fixed in the remake.
- The time, place and playable character do not pop up in the bottom-left corner for Chris' Chapter 7 playable segment if Ashley had stabbed the Psycho with the scissors.
- When Chris is running away from the Wendigo in Chapter 8, his head goes through a branch.
- Jessica reappears in her full outfit briefly when she is shown to be alive in Chapter 9 if she is not in her winter attire anymore. This has been fixed in the remake.
- Emily's head goes through a pipe in the sewers for a quick second.
- When Sam goes down the ladder in the tunnel to the Sanatorium, her leg goes through the first rung.
- When Mike and Sam re-enter the lodge in Chapter 10, Sam switches on the lights only for Mike to quickly switch them off. However, the light switch doesn't change its original position when they flick it. This has been fixed in the remake.
- In the Credits, if Sam is dead and Mike is alive, when Mike finishes talking about leaving Josh behind, he will freeze in place for a few seconds before the screen fades to black. This has been fixed in the remake.
Subtitular Errors[]
- When Sam is struggling to open a gate, she says "Come on, girl, you can do it", although the subtitles say "Come on, come on, you can do it."
- When the Wendigo grabs Matt in the mines, the subtitles will say "NO!" while Matt is just yelping and grunting.
- When Mike closes the window shutters in Chapter 3, he will say "Shutters are shutted," but subtitles will say "shuttered" instead.
- If Matt and Jessica are successful in hiding instead of running, and Matt is successful in stopping Jess from falling to the ground, they will emerge from their hiding spot and the subtitles will say "Come on, come on come on," but Matt is actually saying "Jess, come on, come on, come on."
- In Chapter 7, as Mike and Chris tie Josh up in the shed, when Mike suggests for Chris to return to the lodge, the subtitles will say "Why don't you go back to the lodge and make sure everyone's alright", though Mike will say "everything" instead.
- If Chris is alive in Chapter 10, he will say "GO, GO, GO!!!" but the subtitles say "GET OUTTA HERE, GO, GO, GO!!!". This has been fixed in the remake, where Chris now actually says "GET OUTTA HERE, GO, GO, GO!!!"
- When the recap of Mike in the Sanatorium in Chapter 5 is shown, the subtitles will display his quote as '(Matt)' instead of '(Mike)'. The chapter recaps don't exist in the remake.
- Mike can be heard in Josh's hallucinations saying "A god damn murderer is what you are!". However, the subtitles will display his quote as '(Josh)' instead of '(Mike)'.
- As Josh begins to say "I trust you" in Chapter 10, the subtitles show Hannah saying "Come with us", but she isn't heard saying it. This has been fixed in remake, where Hannah can now be heard.
- Josh says "I trust you" three times right before his first playable segment in Chapter 10, but the subtitles only show him saying it twice.
- In Matt's police interview if Sam, Mike and Jess died, the subtitles say "we went for help because we were trapped and for fucks sake that's why I was on the goddamned tower in the first place!" but Matt actually says "we went for help because he was trapped and for fuck's sake that's why I was on the damn fucking tower in the first place!"
- In the remake epilogue, Sam says "I'm up! I'M UP!", but the subtitles say "I'm - I'M UP!". Afterwards, the subtitles will say "...Wha-" while Sam is breathing.
- Some minor spelling errors. During Emily's escape in Chapter 8, the subtitles will say "breath out, breath in" instead of "breathe". If Ashley reveals the truth about the bite in Chapter 8, the subtitles will say "it say's you’ll be okay" as opposed to "says". The subtitles for Sam in Chapter 9 in the tunnel also misspell "Sanatorium" as "Sanitorium". The latter has been fixed in the remake.
Errors in the Remake[]
- Regardless of Beth choosing to drop Hannah or not in the Prologue, their clip in the credits montage will always show them falling together.
- On the chapter selection menu screen for Chapter 2, Jessica's hairdo is the one from the Prologue (pigtails), instead of her current hair.
- Mike and Jessica's jokey conversation about "hugging a bear" was absent. It has been re-added since Patch 1.06.
- The text of the Letter to Mining Crew contains a spelling error: "Blackwwod" instead of "Blackwood".
- The butterfly effect updates for "...And Which One Will Die" were missing. This has been fixed since Patch 1.08.
- When the Psycho bursts through the door, he says "Sam" one time, while in the original he says it twice. The subtitles still show Sam's name twice.
- While the events of the story begin and end 2 hours earlier, the time on Emily's phone is still 3:20 as in the original, even though her segment in Chapter 7 now starts at 1:00.
- If Chris shot Ashley and Emily survived the mines, Emily's model will be missing from the scene in the safe room where the group try to console Ashley about Chris' death, despite Emily's lines still being heard.
- If Jessica is not in her winter attire following Chapter 3, she will wake up in Chapter 9 already wearing miner boots, and then she immediately walks over to put on said boots again.
- Josh's status screen when he is playable in Chapter 10 was missing. However, it has been re-added since Patch 1.08.
- If Matt had been killed on the meat hook, but Jessica is still alive, a butterfly effect update for "Save Yourself" may say "Jessica found Matt", despite this not being the case.
- Once the Wendigos enter the lodge in Chapter 10, Chris, Ashley and Emily can be seen standing motionless for a second when Sam and Mike run up the stairs. In the remake, however, Emily is missing.
- When Emily gets ready to exit the lodge, she is seen smiling in her close-up. This has been changed since Patch 1.06, where she now has the same expression as in the original game.
- For Josh to achieve his best ending, he must not see anyone dead in the lair in Chapter 10 besides the Stranger, in order to not break down and succumb to the curse of the Wendigo. However, Emily's safe room death in Chapter 8 oddly also counts against Josh's survival, even though her body is not in the lair and thus Josh would have no way of knowing she is dead.
- If Matt and/or Jess die in Chapter 10, their bodies will appear in the lair if Josh becomes a Wendigo; however, if Josh survives as a human, Matt's and/or Jess' bodies inexplicably don't appear in the lair. This in turn results in their Chapter 10 deaths not affecting Josh's ending, as he can't see them, although they should be brought to the lair by the Wendigo shortly after it brings Josh back.
- If Sam survives, she is always shown in the Epilogue in her Los Angeles home several years later, even if she admitted to being the reason for Mike's death to police if he doesn't survive.
Dubious Errors[]
The following are oddities that may be rationalized with an explanation.
- In the original Prologue, Sam goes looking for Hannah to warn her about the prank immediately after having the conversation with the group. However, Sam never finds Hannah in her room or on her way to the guest room, nor does she choose to stay at the door of the guest room to intercept Hannah. This could be attributed to Sam being unsure where to look due to feeling panicked and pressured by the time constraints and the lodge's massive layout. This has been fixed in the remake, where the prologue has been reframed.
- If Emily dies in the mines in Chapter 8, no one ever wonders where Emily and Matt are the whole rest of the game. It is possible they assume Matt and Emily are still working on bringing help to save the group (as Chris and Ashley are told by Emily in Chapter 4), although the group don't guess it might be one of them when the Stranger bangs on the door, nor does anyone bring them up allegedly looking for help in the safe room when the group theorizes what they should do.
- If Mike still has the machete and Sam was captured by the Psycho, he will cut her bonds and then place the machete through the vent by the bottom of her chair. Neither Mike nor Sam will pick up the machete, but Mike will still have it in Chapter 9 when he returns to the Sanatorium. It is possible that Mike picked up the machete off-screen when he left the safe room, before going back to the tunnels.
- If Ashley and/or Chris die in Chapter 9, the Wendigo doesn't attack Emily (if still alive), Ashley (if only Chris opened the trapdoor), or Chris (if not left behind and Ashley opened the trapdoor) when they go back after being told to by Sam, despite the Wendigo sticking around long enough to prey on Chris if he had been left behind. It's possible the Wendigo had left the area (potentially along with Chris' body) just before Emily, Ashley and/or Chris would have reached it on their way back to the lodge, but it's seemingly a very small window of time as seen if Chris reunites with Ashley and potentially Emily.
- After reading the Scrawled Journal, Sam only explains to Josh that Hannah was still alive and in the mines for about a month and then dug up Beth's body. Given that no one told Josh anything about the Wendigo, it's not clear how he realized that the Wendigo who captured him was Hannah, although he was in a broken state of mind and might have connected seeing the butterfly tattoo on the Wendigo with Sam's words.
- If Matt and/or Jessica successfully hide from the Wendigo on the first opportunity, they will leave the hiding spot and hurry in the same direction the Wendigo had gone. However, the Wendigo is then shown to be behind them again rather than in front. It's possible the Wendigo may have looped back around by going through one of the holes in the wall to the right.
- Even though Chris sprained his ankle while running from the Wendigo in Chapter 8, and is limping in Chapter 9, he flees the basement and lodge in Chapter 10 ahead of everyone else with no sign of injury. It's possible adrenaline had an effect, or his leg was getting better.
- Characters' behavior after seeing or learning of another person's death often doesn't change beyond their initial reaction, such as Ashley's upon settling in the safe room if she had witnessed Chris' death. Similarly, Sam's interactions with Mike, if he shoots Emily, and with Ashley, if she tries to cover up the truth about the bites, remain the same despite her relationship status with them plummeting. It's possible the life or death scenarios force them to put it behind them and move on quicker, however unrealistic.
