It came from down there... The mines... there's something in the mines.

The Wendigos are the ultimate antagonists of Until Dawn. They become active in the second half of the game after the Psycho's identity is revealed, though they appear in the first half and pose a secret threat to some of the protagonists.

As described by the Native American Cree legends, they were once humans who became cannibalistic monsters possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo after eating the flesh of other humans. Many Wendigos reside on Blackwood Mountain, with one particularly stalking and potentially killing the group members through the night.

History[]

The original Wendigo legends originated from First Nation tribes who were present on Blackwood Mountain from the 1400s until the 1850s. One of these native tribes named the Cree revered in the mountain and its nature: they would hunt elsewhere in the belief that it would bring misfortune to harm any animal in the area. Additionally, they believed harming the mountain itself in any way would inflict a terrible curse.

Eventually, European explorers and mining concerns arrived in the area, eager to make their fortune. In 1893, they officially started excavating the mountain, finding tin and, later, traces of radium. They then mined deeper into the sacred mountain. The Cree tribe claimed that the mountain cried out at that moment, and the Wendigo spirit was released, cursing the land and its inhabitants. Soon after, the first Wendigo possessions on the mountain began, prompting Jack Fiddler’s grandfather to dedicate his life to tracking and capturing them. However, one particularly imposing creature known as the Makkapitew eluded all Wendigo hunters, killing any who were brave enough to confront it - including Jack's grandfather.

Legend of the mountain's rich reserves bruited to more prospectors, and a group called The Blasting Crew established more mining operations in the winter of 1951-1952. Though long neglected structural weakness resulted in a tragic disaster, which caused part of the mine to cave in, with 30 miners left trapped and eventually starving. Dozens of men were murdered and cannibalized. A rescue team later found only 12 survivors.[2] The miners who were still "missing" were hidden away in the archives, but it is clear that the survivors resorted to cannibalism to survive.

The survivors soon began to display unusual physiological characteristics, and a cover-up ensued as they were illicitly confined in the Blackwood Pines Sanatorium for study. On the orders of Sanatorium owner as well as mines and hotel establisher Jefferson Bragg, staff observed and experimented on the miners as they swiftly mutated into Wendigos. Eventually, these miners who turned into Wendigos broke out of confinement and slaughtered the Sanatorium staff, prompting the immediate shutdown of the Sanatorium and the North West Mines. This left the mountain deserted with the exception of the Wendigos and Jack Fiddler, who, during the decades that followed, tracked down each transformed miner and successfully captured them one by one, keeping them contained in the abandoned Sanatorium they broke out of, while he hunted any other Wendigo that happened to emerge on the mountain.

In 1997, famous movie mogul Bob Washington was presented with the golden opportunity to buy Blackwood Mountain, and he could not possibly refuse. Though before his plans came to fruition, he was warned vehemently by Fiddler, who desperately tried to stop the construction, claiming that the land was sacred to his forefathers. Bob Washington, however, refused to listen and aspects of the mountain were restored in working order and so the luxurious Washington Lodge was built, creating a perfect getaway for Bob Washington and his family.

More than a decade later, in 2014, the children of Bob and his wife Melinda Washington, Josh and twins Hannah and Beth, invited their friends Ashley, Chris, Emily, Matt, Jessica, Mike and Sam to their family lodge for a weekend of good times. However, after some of the friends played a prank on Hannah, she fled the lodge into the woods during a snowstorm, followed by Beth. The pair soon realized they weren't alone as the Makkapitew, still roaming free, began chasing after them while Jack Fiddler was hunting it. Before Jack could kill the Wendigo, it forced the sisters over a cliff edge, causing them to fall into a mine slope, killing Beth instantly. Hannah, however, survived her fall with a broken leg. After a month of no rescue, Hannah found herself having to make a desperate decision as she ate the flesh of her sister to survive. Soon after, Hannah became stronger: her transformation into a Wendigo began.

Exactly one year later, the group of friends return to the lodge after being invited by Josh, to commemorate the twins and have a get-together like they used to. Things quickly go south, however, as Hannah, now a complete Wendigo roaming free on the mountain, stalks and potentially kills the friends throughout the night.

Appearance[]

Wendigo lodge 2024

A Wendigo exhibits a drastic mutation of human anatomy, acquiring a disfigured yet powerful form. They lose much of their muscle mass and have prominent bones while limbs become longer, giving them a slender and skeletal appearance. This also makes them considerably taller than the average person, half or twice the height depending on how they feed. They exhibit spinal disfiguration, which gives them a hunchback-like appearance but allows them to move around on both two and four legs. The teeth lengthen and deform, becoming more canine, the nails are also longer and sharper. Wendigo's vision is less keen, as evidenced by their visibly milky white eyes. Their skin is white pale and taut against their bodies much like a glossy, stretched armor. They also suffer from different forms of skin torture, such as sweating acids that strengthen their outer coating.

During metamorphosis, possessed humans lose their hair and eventually all male and female characteristics, acquiring an identical genderless appearance. However, Wendigos will retain any alterations they had on their skin as humans, like Hannah's tattoo and Billy's scar, which allows to identify them. Furthermore, the Wendigos shown in the game managed to retain the clothes in which they transformed, such as the miners' work uniforms and Hannah's underwear.

Although Wendigos are shown to have physical bodies, they are actually immaterial spirits. Their true appearance can be seen after killing a Wendigo with fire and takes the form of a small fireball. Upon closer look, a glimpse of the Wendigo's screaming face can be seen.

Characteristics[]

Wendigos are shown to be extremely deadly creatures. Their anatomy allows them to move not only on two legs, but on four legs as well, being capable of crawling on any surface and leaping to different spots in the blink of the eye. Although they look emaciated, Wendigos are abnormally strong, easily lifting heavy objects and tearing their victims apart, even able to kill other Wendigos with bare hands; the Doctor's Report documents one lifting 725 lb weights. Their skin is extremely hard like armor, which renders the Wendigo practically impervious against ballistics and sharp weapons and allows them to feel no pain. However, some heavy firearms, such as shotguns and hunting rifles, can stun Wendigos for a short period of time. The extreme heat from fire and explosives can burn away the thick skin, inflicting great pain while also rendering them completely vulnerable to other weapons, even the simple shovel or pipe.

Wendigos are recorded to have some set behavior patterns. They only hunt at night and have great predatory skills, often tracking their prey for up to several hours. They do not appear to lose their humanity completely as they possess small intelligence and can use some human-like tricks to lure their prey. For example, Hannah throws Jessica's phone through the window to get her to leave the cabin, cuts the support lines to drop the fire tower (with Emily and Matt in it) down the mines and mimics Jessica's voice to get Ashley and/or Chris to open the trapdoor. Not only that, Hannah tends to decapitate her victims and keeps their heads as some sort of trophies. In relation to each other, Wendigos are mostly aggressive and always attack, possibly seeing the others as prey, a way to reduce competition for food or territory or simply because they are sadistic killers.

Vision

A Wendigo's vision.

Wendigos have unique vision. Although much worse than humans, they become more sensitive to movement: mobile objects are highlighted in their vision, otherwise they are usually unable to track those who remain still. Their primary way of vocalization is through prolonged high-pitched screams that they use to scare prey into moving. However, being former humans, Wendigos are able to speak with normal voice, though this is used primarily as a bait for prey.

Upon transformation into a Wendigo, humans gradually become aggressive and lose their minds. However, they are able to retain fragments of humanity and memories from their past lives. The miners Wendigo never attack one another and even form a sort of pack due to being close friends as humans. Hannah spares her brother Josh after they recognize each other and also never kills Mike on the spot (though can mortally wound him), suggesting that she has retained a part of her affection for him. On the other hand, while Wendigos mostly just slash their prey with their claws, Hannah shows cruel sadism to her former friends, killing them slowly and painfully by gouging out their eyes, decapitating them, smashing their faces, et cetera.

Wendigos are not just physical beings, but rather spirits embodying cold and hunger. They are drawn to people who have committed an act of cannibalism and possess them, initiating an irreversible transformation. It's worth noting that cannibalism is the only way to become a Wendigo and they are not contagious through bites or scratches. The Wendigo's main weakness is fire, which not only causes damage, but can kill them. However, it is advised to use it only as a last resort, as Wendigos are effectively immortal and after death their spirit will break free, waiting for the next victims.

Until Dawn[]

One Year Ago[]

While the friends are partying and pranking Hannah at the lodge, the Stranger is hunting the Makkapitew in the woods not far from them.

As Beth walks through the woods looking for Hannah, she occasionally notices streams of fire in the distance. Finding Hannah, the sisters are about to leave when they hear a scream and turn around, only to be horrified by its source, the Makkapitew. They try to escape from the Wendigo, but end up cornered on a cliff, from which they fall, despite the Stranger's attempts to save them. Immediately afterward, he attacks and burns the Makkapitew to death.

Meanwhile, Hannah survived the falls while Beth died. During the month she was trapped in the mines waiting for help, Hannah began to starve. Eventually, she made a desperate decision and ate Beth's corpse, unwittingly falling into the Wendigo curse. Hannah's story and her transformation are recorded in her diary which can be found by Sam and Mike.

Present[]

Chapter 2[]

The Wendigo begins to stalk Mike and Jessica after they leave the lodge and head to the guest cabin. The couple occasionally hear it screeching. In the mines, the Wendigo can briefly be seen scurrying behind some wreckage behind Mike after he finds a totem and will also be spotted by Jessica if Mike gives her a flashlight. While Mike is looking at the cabin through the telescope, the Wendigo will jumpscare the player, although Mike will not notice anything.

Meanwhile, the same screeching noises are heard by the other protagonists, mainly Sam after she exits the bathroom to find Josh, and Matt and Emily when they are on their way to find Em's lost bag.

Chapter 3[]

Jess cabin 2024 6

Jessica is grabbed through the cabin window by the Wendigo.

The Wendigo continues to follow Mike and Jessica, who keep occasionally hearing it scheeching. After they come across a deer, Wendigo begins to chase it, causing the deer to run in front of the couple and scare them again. Wendigo eventually catches up and mutilates the animal, leaving it on the trail to be discovered by Mike and Jessica. As they comfort the dying deer, the Wendigo drags its body into the trees and starts chasing the couple until they reach the cabin.

The Wendigo will watch the couple through the window as they prepare to make out, after which it throws Jessica's phone through the bathroom window. It then watches her leave the cabin to yell at her friends (thinking they're playing a prank on her) and say that they won't stop her from having sex with Mike. As Jessica returns to the cabin and closes the door, the Wendigo grabs her through the door window and pulls her outside.

Chapter 4[]

Handigo2

The Wendigo watching Mike.

The Wendigo drags Jessica through the woods and into the mines as Mike chases after them. If he takes too long, it will give the Wendigo enough time to rip off Jessica's lower jaw, killing her, before throwing her body in the elevator in front of Mike. If he moves quickly, the Wendigo will leave Jess in the elevator severely injured, but alive.

After the elevator falls deeper into the mines, the Wendigo will look down at Mike from the top of the elevator shaft before retreating, giving him enough time to shoot it. When Mike climbs up the shaft and starts chasing the Stranger, he can fail to slide under a door, making him to go through a small, dark tunnel instead. When he stops to relight the lighter, the Wendigo can be briefly seen behind some slats looking at Mike.

Chapter 5[]

While exploring the Sanatorium, Mike can find several clues related to the Wendigos, such as the Strange Skull, Name Tag and Death Certificate. He also finds the trap the Stranger has set for the Wendigo (a moving arm with a hidden beartrap) and possibly falls into it himself.

Having dealt with Mike and Jessica, the Wendigo begins to pursue Matt and Emily as they head toward the fire tower to get help (due to the Psycho terrorizing Josh, Chris and Ashley at the same time the Wendigo was terrorizing Mike and Jess). When the couple reaches the cliff, they are startled by a loud screech before being cornered by a herd of deer.

Chapter 6[]

If Matt fell down the cliff, Emily will watch in shock as the Wendigo's hand appears and drags Matt's corpse away.

When Emily and possibly Matt get to the fire tower and try to contact the rangers over the radio, the Wendigo approaches the tower and triggers the motion sensor, alerting the couple to its presence. It then attempts to break into the cabin and bangs on the tarpdoor. After failing to get inside, the Wendigo cuts the lines holding the tower in place, causing the entire structure along with Matt and Emily to fall into the mines.

If Matt is alive and tried to save Emily, he will fall into the danger zone of the mines where he will encounter the Wendigo. It will drag Matt down the tunnel and if he doesn't have the flare gun or fails to use it, the Wendigo will hook him through the jaw. Otherwise, the Wendigo will flee after getting shot, releasing Matt. If Matt jumped to safety or is dead, the Wendigo will scurry off into the night.

Chapter 7[]

The Stranger will find the Wendigo in the mines and begin chasing it. Their hunt is witnessed by Emily, who hears screeches and sees streams of fire while trying to get out of the mines.

Chapter 8[]

As the Stranger tries to calm a panicking Emily, the Wendigo appears behind them in the dark. The Stranger pushes Emily deeper into the mines and gives her a bag of flares, saving her, while he stays behind and holds off Wendigo with a flamethrower.

Nevertheless, the Wendigo still finds Emily and starts following her. If she found the Romantic Postcard, the Wendigo will be seen watching Emily from behind a gap as she walks away. Additionally, Emily hears screeches as she walks through the tunnels.

Emily is bitten

Emily, not having the flare gun, is bitten.

As Emily squeezes through a narrow tunnel, the Wendigo tries to grab her twice through the wooden walls, and then fully begins to chase her through the mines and then mining facility on the surface. If Emily fails to take the elevator or place enough obstacles for the Wendigo, it will capture Emily and gouge out her eyes. After Emily passes the conveyor belt, she can use the flare gun to shot the Wendigo and slow it down, giving her enoygh time to escape unharmed. If she fails to use the flare gun or doesn't have it, the Wendigo will bite her in the shoulder. Either way, Emily manages to escape.

If Emily survived, she will get to the lodge and try to tell her friends about the monster, although they will be confused and think she is talking about Josh (who was the Psycho). The Stranger then arrives at the lodge and tells the group the truth about the Wendigos, making Mike realize that it was the Wendigo who attacked Jessica earlier. After he reveals that he left Josh alone in the shed, the Stranger and Chris head out to find him. The Stranger tells Chris more about the Wendigo's abilities along they way.

Stranger7

The Stranger is killed by the Wendigo

Upon arriving at the shed, the two find Josh missing and assume he is dead. As they are about to return to the lodge, the Wendigo attacks them and decapitates the Stranger. It then starts chasing Chris and can decapitate him as well if he doesn't make it to the lodge in time or Ashley refuses/fails to let him in. While the friends retreat to the basement, the Wendigo is seen dragging an unconscious Josh through the woods.

Back in the basement, if Emily is bitten, the group will notice the bite and thinking it is contagious, will demand Emily leave. Upon her refusal, Mike will point a gun at her face and has the option of shooting Emily. Regardless, Ashley then reads the Stranger's Journal, where she discovers more information about the Wendigos, including their history, characteristics, and abilities. From the journal she also learn the bite is not infectious as she formerly claimed and that Emily was not a threat to begin with, causing the group to be relieved or horrorified depending on how Mike decided Emily's fate.

Chapter 9[]

Wendigo Sanatorium-0

A Wendigo in the Sanatorium.

Mike returns to the Sanatorium looking for Josh and possibly with Wolfie (who he can tame on his first visit) explores the psychiatric wing. After gathering enough evidence, Mike realizes that the miners who were treated at the Sanatorium after the mine collapse in the 1950s all transformed into the Wendigos and massacred the entire staff before subsequently being recaptured by the Stranger. Soon, Mike and Wolfie enconter these Wendigo miners, who begin to pursue them. During the lengthy chase, Mike kills several miners, though Wolfie can die saving him and he can be ambushed by one of the Wendigos before he makes it out of the Sanatorium.

Meanwhile, the others follow Mike to warn him about the Wendigos in the Sanatorium. When Ashley fall behind in the mine tunnel, the main Wendigo can be seen crawling down in the hole. It then tries to lure Ashley and/or possibly Chris by mimicking Jessica's voice and crying for help. If Ashley/Chris decide to investigate the voice instead of rejoining the group, they will find a trapdoor, upon opening which they will be attacked and decapitated by the Wendigo. In Chris' case, if Ashley has already opened the trapdoor, he will be killed regardless due to the Wendigo being freed.

Sam6

Sam attacking the Wendigo Billy Bates.

When the others return to the lodge, Sam continues to search for Mike alone. She soon finds him either in the mines or in the Sanatorium, fighting one of the Wendigo miners, Billy Bates. Together, the two manage to kill Billy, after which they resume their search for Josh, thinking they've finished off every Wendigo in the Sanatorium.

Chapter 10[]

The Wendigo appears at the end of Josh's hallucinations as he slowly goes insane from isolation in the mines.

Meanwhile, Sam and Mike explore the mines and able to find Hannah's diary, which reveals what happened a year ago, and the two realize the Wendigo that's been stalking them throughout the night is actually Hannah, who ate Beth's body to survive. They eventually find her lair where they discover the body of the Stranger and possibly the bodies and heads of Jessica, Matt, Emily, Chris and/or Ashley if they have been killed prior. As the couple enters the lair, Hannah is seen watching them in the water.

In the lair, Sam and Mike find Josh and the former tells him the truth about Hannah and Beth if the journal was found. Sam climbs out of the mine by the wall while Mike and Josh head back through the lake. However, the boys are attacked by Hannah and while Mike manages to escape, Josh is recaptured. If Sam didn't find the journal, Josh won't recognize Hannah in the Wendigo and she will crush his head. Otherwise, the two will recognize each other and Hannah will spare her brother, dragging Josh back to the lair.

Jessica death Matt

Hannah the Wendigo having killed Jessica.

If Jessica and/or Matt survived, they will be seen attempting to leave the mines. If they are together, the pair will exchange their experiences with the Wendigo. They almost make it to the exit when Hannah appears and chases them, possibly killing both Matt and Jessica. If they manage to hide, Hannah will leave and the two will live until dawn.

Back at the lodge, the survivors are horrified to discover that both the miners and Hannah have infiltrated the place. As they stand still, the Wendigos start fighting and damage a gas pipe, causing it to leak. Together, Sam and Mike attempt to break a light bulb and turn on the switch to ignite the gas and blow up the lodge. As the two put the plan into action, Sam must divert Hannah's attention to herself to save the others from being discovered and killed while hiding herself. If Sam is found, Hannah will impale her through the abdomen and Mike will be the one to blow up the lodge. Otherwise, as everyone leaves, Sam turns on the switch, blowing up the lodge on and effectively killing the remaining Wendigos, including Hannah.

Credits[]

The dawn breaks and all survivors are rescured and interviewed by the police, where everyone recounts their experiences with the Wendigo. If Josh is dead or retained his sanity (in the remake), all the Wendigos on the mountain will be dead. However, if Josh is alive and went insane, he will be possessed by the Wendigo spirit after cannibalizing the Stranger's corpse and will be partially transformed by the time the search party finds him, continuing the curse of Blackwood Mountain.

Known Wendigos[]

Throughout Until Dawn history, 14 (possibly 15) Wendigos have been confirmed to exist.

Miners[]

Twelve miners became possessed and transformed into the Wendigos in late 1951-early 1952. They and the other eighteen miners were members of a blasting crew that worked in the North West Mines. When part of the mine collapsed on December 13, 1951, the crew became trapped for 23 days before they were finally rescued on January 5, 1952. During this period, some the miners survived by cannibalizing the rest of their teammates.

After being rescued, the miners were taken to the Blackwood Pines Sanatorium for recovery, where they were secretly studied due to unusual ongoing physical changes. By February 24, 1952, the miners had fully transformed into Wendigos and broke free, slaughtering most of the sanatorium staff, after which they were never heard from again.

By the events of the game, all of the Wendigo miners have been captured by the Stranger, with half of them killed and the rest locked back in the Sanatorium. They chase Mike and Wolfie during their visit to the psychiatric wing, though they manage to escape, killing a couple of Wendigos along the way. The last of the remaining miners eventually make their way out of the Sanatorium and into the Washington lodge through an underground tunnel, where they are ultimately killed in a fight with Hannah and in an explosion.

BillyBates2

Billy Bates (pre-transformation) with his family.

Billy Bates[]

Out of twelve miners, only one identity is revealed, being Billy Bates (also known as Patient 9 in the Sanatorium records), who can be identified in Wendigo form by a scar on his head. Billy's transformation is documented in an old case study, which helps Mike realize that the Wendigos are transformed miners.

Billy is one of the few Wendigos who pursues Mike and possibly kills Wolfie. Ultimatly, he meets his end in the Sanatorium or in the mines, where Billy is killed by the combined efforts of Mike and Sam.

Makkapitew[]

Makkapitew Remake

The Makkapitew, the strongest of the Wendigos.

The main antagonist of the Prologue, the Makkapitew is one of two patients from the Blackwood Sanatorium, either a nameless patient controlled by the player or their roommate Anna/Gordon Bennet,[3] who turned into a Wendigo in February 1952. After the miners transformed and began wreaking mayhem in the Sanatorium, it was shut down, with patients being abandoned and starved.

Out of desperation, either the protagonist or the roommate resort to cannibalism, becoming possessed. By the time they and a couple of other survivors reach the cable car to escape the mountain, it is revealed that the infected one has almost completed the transformation. After helping the survivors escape or killing them for betrayal, the protagonist/the roommate finally turn into a Wendigo and eventually escape the Sanatorium.

For several decades, the Makkapitew hid first from Jack's grandfather (whom it killed) and then his grandson. By February 2, 2014, Jack was chasing the Makkapitew, who in turn chased Hannah and Beth to their deaths off the cliffside. Immediately afterward, the Makkapitew was burned to death by Jack, avenging the sisters and ending Wendigo's terror.

Hannah Washington[]

Wendigo 1

Hannah as the Wendigo.

The main antagonist of the game, Hannah turned into a Wendigo in February-March 2014. After the Washington twins fell off a cliff, Hannah managed to survive, though Beth died instantly from multiple injuries. For the next month, Hannah waited for help, but in no avail, and driven mad by hunger and a desire to survive, she ate Beth's body. After that, she turned into a Wendigo and escaped the mines.

For a year, Hannah roamed around the mountain, hiding from Jack. On February 2, 2015, the anniversary of the sisters' disappearance, their friends reunited for a winter getaway and Hannah began her hunt. Throughout the night, she stalks and possibly kills all 8 protagonists, but is ultimatly killed when the survivors set the lodge on fire.

Josh Washington[]

JoshWendigo3

Josh partially transformed into a Wendigo.

Josh may potentially turn into a Wendigo in February 2015. As Hannah terrorizes the group, she captures Josh and drags him to her lair in the mines. He is soon rescued by Sam and Mike, but is immediately confronted by Hannah. If Sam told him the truth she read in the Scrawled Journal, Josh will recognize Hannah in time and cry out her name, causing her to recognize him back.

Instead of killing Josh, Hannah will drag him back to her lair. Not knowing how to get out and with no help, Josh will spend several days in the mines, slowly going insane with isolation and guilt over the possible deaths of his friends. In the end, he cannibalizes The Stranger, causing him to be possessed by the Wendigo spirit. Eventually, a search party led by the authorities find a partially-transformed Josh, who attacks them, leaving their fate unknown.

Trivia[]

  • Chapter 1 is the only chapter in the entire game where the Wendigos don't appear.
  • Josh, The Patient, and Anna/Gordon are the only characters in Until Dawn universe who can optionally transform into a Wendigo.
  • Mike and Sam are the only protagonists who are able to kill the Wendigo.
  • In the PS3 prototype, the Wendigos, or at least Hannah, were almost the same, except that they had a less threatening appearance and more similar to that of a zombie, their fangs were bigger and their nose was wider. They also had a normal vision instead of a movement based view.
  • Like the Washington twins, the Psycho and the miners, the Wendigos originally had their own clueline that unraveled their history with Native Americans in the 19th century. It was present in the prototype, but didn't make it to the final version of the game.
    • Some clues refer to the case of Swift Runner, which is a real and one of the most famous cases of wendigo psychosis [4].
  • The Case Study Dossier found in the Sanatorium shows how long the transformation takes and what signs appear. Transformation begins with what appears to be an incubation period of at least 4 days (perhaps much longer) before any visible signs appear. The transformation then progresses very quickly from four days to up to at least twelve. Each day, they become more monstrous and lose their humanity.
  • Hannah, as a Wendigo, is significantly larger and stronger than the other Wendigos, being able to overpower every single one of them. This is due to the fact that she was the only Wendigo roaming free on the mountain during the events of the game and therefore had access to food, while the rest had already been rounded up and locked in the Sanatorium by the Stranger. Considering a Wendigo becomes stronger when it feeds, this explains her immense strength and size, as confirmed by director Will Byles.[5]
    • Another possible contribution to her size is that Hannah was possessed by the spirit of the Makkapitew, the strongest of the Wendigos, who was killed the same night Hannah and Beth disappeared. However, this is a fan theory and unconfirmed officially.
  • The Wendigo miners seem to have a low chance of killing a person, reasonably as time goes by or through lack of food, as none of the Wendigos transformed from 1952 kill a human during the events of the game. This is evidenced by Mike surviving their attacks regardless and the Stranger being capable of containing them.
  • According to the Stranger, one of the ways the Wendigos like to kill their victims is by completely immobilizing them, then stripping the skin off their bodies piece by piece, making the still living victim watch in agony as they harvest and eat their organs. This style of death, however, has never been shown in the game, indicating he might have made it up to make Chris obey him.
  • Despite being undead-seeming mutant humans, Wendigos are not zombies, nor do they have an infectious bite; a person bitten by a Wendigo will not become one due to the attack, only if they eat human flesh while a Wendigo spirit is free to possess them.
  • The faint scream of Hannah's human voice can be heard if she spares Josh.
  • The Wendigos depicted in Until Dawn share certain similarities with the Future Predator from Primeval. Both creatures hunt by sound and movement, both are incredibly fast and agile, both have the ability to climb walls, and the Wendigo's vision is almost identical to that of the Future Predator's, though the latter has different colors and sound-producing objects make small ripples around them. There are also physical similarities. Both creatures are roughly seven to eight feet tall, have mouths full of jagged teeth, and have long, skinny limbs tipped with deadly claws for tearing apart their prey. Both creatures also hunt in a similar fashion, as both stalk their prey for a long period of time before finally making the kill.
  • The use of a flare gun against the Wendigos is the same method used by Dean Winchester in the US TV series, Supernatural, in the show's second episode.
  • In the remake, the Wendigos' screams sound more like a loud animal roar rather than a high-pitched scream.
