— Matt to Emily
|
Matthew "Matt" Taylor is one of the eight main protagonists and a playable character in Until Dawn. He was voiced and motion captured by actor Jordan Fisher.
Appearance[]
Matt is a teenage African-American boy with black hair and brown eyes. In the original game, his hair is very short while. In the remake, it is more styled with clipped sides and curls on top.
One Year Ago[]
During the Prologue, Matt wears a gray t-shirt, a gray hoodie, and a pair of jeans.
Until Dawn[]
When the group meets up one year later, Matt is seen wearing gray sweat pants, a purple Letterman jacket over a denim collared shirt, and a gray turtleneck which matches the sweater of his girlfriend Emily. He wears blue snow boots.
Damage and other changes[]
Matt’s changes in appearance are as follows:
- Facial scratches and dirt: from when the tower falls
- Bloodied cheek and more tears on clothes: from Chapter 6 Wendigo encounter (Determinant)
- Gash on side of face: hit with a shovel by Jess (Determinant)
Personality[]
| “ | He's got a big heart, and you can tell that's very evident, especially how he treats his girlfriend Emily. He's kind of a meat head, but in the best way possible. He wants everyone to be happy, he's a people pleaser, and I can definitely attest to being, you know, THAT guy. I'm always the friend that wants everybody to be happy and wants everybody to be taken care of. And that's definitely Matt. | ” |
— Jordan Fisher on Matt
|
In the original game, Matt is described as motivated, ambitious and active, which is mostly remarking on his visible passion for sports. Despite his impressively strong appearance, Matt's character is far from being impetuous: he generally comes across as friendly, even being described as the good guy of the group by Dr. Hill. He is the high school's star linebacker and aspires to turn this passion into a professional career. To achieve this, Matt hopes for a sports scholarship to a top college, as his GPA is not up to par.[1] Matt may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he has a big heart and generally knows when to stay out of the way in situations.
In the 2024 remake, Matt is described as obliging, dependable and active, with the first two traits highlighting his people-pleasing nature. More often than not, he embraces the role of the gentle giant, readily following the lead of others. However, this also makes him prone to being a 'pushover,' especially when it comes to his new girlfriend, Emily, to whom he is fiercely loyal to. Their relationship can be clearly quite one-sided at times, as Emily may take advantage of this trait, while Matt obediently complies with her demands. If provoked, however, Matt’s usual easygoing nature gives way to irritation. His feelings for Emily make him sensitive to her past with Mike, and jealousy surfaces if he catches them talking. This will sour his mood and lead him to confront Mike—potentially even fight him—before later questioning Emily about her feelings.
Matt is depicted in-game as having low bravery, an attribute than can develop or decrease further over the course of the night, depending on the player's actions. He can risk his own well-being to save those close to him, such as attempting to save his girlfriend Emily on the toppled tower and protecting Jessica in the mines when they later meet, but he can also prioritize himself and ensure his own survival if he leaves Emily behind and/or potentially abandons Jessica.
Until Dawn[]
Biography[]
2024[]
Matt's talents on the football field aren't matched in his academic pursuits, so this gentle giant hopes to make his way to college with a sports scholarship. He is fiercely loyal to his new girlfriend Emily, unaware that he is being used as a pawn in her efforts to get back with Mike.[2]
2015[]
Matt is the high school's star linebacker, but he isn't necessarily the sharpest tool in the box. He's hoping for a sports scholarship to a top college, because his GPA isn't going to cut the mustard. He mostly plays the part of the big friendly giant, but when Matt sees red, it's best to stay out of his way.
Matt is fiercely loyal to his new girlfriend, Emily, maybe even too loyal. Their relationship could be described as being a little one-way: when Emily says something, Matt does it.[1]

In the remake[]
Matt after filming the prank.
Matt is first seen sitting next to Ashley in the living room hanging out with Emily, Mike, and Sam. When Jessica enters, Sam tries to discourage the group from going through with the prank they are about to play on Hannah. Despite this, Matt and Ashley head to the guest room followed by the others with the exception of Sam who was unwilling, and Chris and Josh who were passed out from drinking in another part of the house.
Under orders from Emily, Matt hides behind the partition and records the prank with his phone and a selfie stick. As Hannah takes off her shirt and Sam barges into the room, Matt and Ashley exit their hiding spots, their smiles disappear and change to an expression of regret upon seeing Hannah so upset. Matt and the rest of the group chase after her to the door but doesn't follow her or Beth into the woods.
In the original game[]
Matt filming the prank on Hannah.
Matt is first seen separate from the rest of the group. He is talking with Ashley in the living room before Jessica, Emily, Mike, and Sam emerge from the kitchen. The pair follow the others to play the prank on Hannah while Sam heads upstairs.
In the guest room, Matt hides in a wardrobe with a camera to record Hannah during their prank. After Hannah begins to take off her blouse, he and the rest of the group pop out at her, leaving her humiliated. When Hannah runs out of the lodge, he and the others follow her to the door, but does not chase after her or Beth into the woods.Chapter 1[]
A year later, Matt returns to the lodge. During this time, he and Emily have begun a relationship after her breakup with Mike. Matt is helping Emily carry her bags to the lodge when Mike jumps out at them. Matt can either tell Mike to stay away from them or be welcoming towards him. After Mike leaves, Emily tells Matt that she needs to go back and talk to Sam, and leaves Matt to travel in the direction Mike had gone. Regardless of whether Matt agrees or rejects her decision, she will send him away. Matt starts to travel up to the lodge but decides to scare Ashley when he sees her looking through a telescope. Before Matt talks to Ashley, she sees Mike and Emily hugging through a telescope. If Ashley allows him to look, he becomes furious with both Mike and Emily. If she doesn't, Matt will remain calm and collected.
Chapter 2[]
Matt carries the bags into the lodge's living room to find Mike and Jessica walking in. If he saw Mike with Emily, he can either fight Mike or tell him that he saw him and Emily through the telescope. Mike will tell Matt that they were just talking and Matt can either back down or challenge him further. Mike and Jessica will start to cuddle just as Emily walks in. She will voice her disgust for the couple, prompting an argument between her and Jessica, which Matt can either provoke or attempt to diffuse. If he provokes Jessica, Emily will be grateful, but if he attempts to diffuse the situation, Emily will be angry with him for questioning her. After Emily and Jessica finish arguing, she notices that her bag has gone missing and asks Matt to help her find it.
Note: the following segment is included in the extended and pre-order editions of the original game, as well as all versions of the remake.
Matt and Emily.
Matt and Emily begin to walk back to the cable car station in search of her bag. If Matt fought Mike, Emily will ask him about his motivations behind the attack. If Emily and Jessica fought instead, Matt can either criticize her, ask her if she's feeling better or tell her that he and she should start over. They find that the gate leading to the cable cars is locked, so they take a detour to take them to the car. As they're traveling, Matt can either flirt with Emily or act impatiently. Upon suggesting they should have intercourse on a table, he wipes away snow on its surface, and can possibly find a carving with the initials ''Mike + Em'' from when they were dating, making him jealous, though Emily reassures him she's there with him, and that Mike's the ''chump.''
They find a giant totem, which Emily dares Matt to stick his hand into, before seemingly being sucked into it herself. Matt soon realizes that Emily was just playing a prank on him, but they are interrupted by a noise in the distance. They continue on their path and find a pigs head with a bloody note that says "Welcome Back." Emily decides that she does not want her bag anymore and they start to head back to the lodge.
Chapter 4[]
Matt and Emily are on their way back to the lodge when they see Chris and Ashley stumbling out of the shed. Chris and Ashley frantically scream that there is a maniac that forced Chris to kill Josh, and Emily tells Matt that they need to get help. Matt either agrees or disagrees, if he disagrees, Emily convinces Matt. Either way, they then make their way to the cable car station.
Chapter 5[]
Upon arriving at the cable car station, Matt finds an axe stuck in the door. He then notices a slightly ajar window. Emily proposes that Matt should use the axe to break down the door, while Matt may suggest Emily should be able to squeeze through the window and open the door from the outside. If Matt's relationship with Emily is high, she will go through the window, though she won't be happy about it. If Matt's relationship status is low, or the player decides to use the axe instead, Matt will break down the door.
Regardless of how the couple gets into the station, they discover that the Psycho destroyed most of the station. Matt then finds a map that leads to a fire tower, but Emily dismisses it. Soon after, they discover that the maniac stole the keys to the cable car station, so Emily proposes that they head to the radio tower to signal for help.
Matt can either agree or disagree, but regardless of his choice, the couple will still go to the fire tower. They then start making their way to the fire tower. They climb the ledge of the cable car station and continue on. Before they can reach it, however, a group of angry deer backs them to the edge of the cliff where Hannah and Beth had fallen a year ago.
Chapter 6[]
The deer progress towards Matt and Emily, leaving a little room between them and the edge of the cliff. If Matt enrages the deer, they knock him off the ledge. He manages to grab onto the ledge, similarly to Beth, and can make it to safety if he reacts quickly enough (by not missing any QTEs). If he fails in doing so, he will fall to his demise. If Matt just ignores the herd, he will be safe, as there is no need for Matt to climb back up the cliff.
If Matt survives, he and Emily venture to the radio tower, whose power had been turned off. Emily can find a flare gun at the top of the tower and can either keep it for herself or give it to Matt. If Matt receives the flare gun, he will either fire it immediately or hold onto it, depending on whether Matt agreed to go to the fire tower. After Emily and Matt restore the power to the tower, Emily makes contact with the rangers. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Emily is finally able to communicate with the rangers who tell the couple that they can dispatch aid at dawn. Matt and Emily temporarily rejoice, until the Wendigo cuts the cable cords to the tower.
Matt on the fallen tower, down the mines.
Matt manages to survive the fall and edges his way out of the tower. He sees Emily hanging onto a partially detached steel railing, which is becoming more detached by the second. Here he has the option of confronting her about either her behavior or relationship with Mike or assure her that she will be fine. He can attempt to save her or jump to safety onto a nearby ledge. Regardless of what Matt does, the tower creaks and becomes more unstable. Matt has another opportunity to jump to the ledge or to try to save Emily again.
Matt's decision to help Emily a second time results in him and Emily both falling from the radio tower. Matt survives the fall and ends up in a cave. As he begins to look for a way out, the Wendigo grabs him and begins to drag him along the floor. If Emily gave Matt the flare gun and Matt didn't already use it, he can shoot the Wendigo with it. Doing so will result in the Wendigo frantically running away. Otherwise, the Wendigo will hang Matt through his jaw on a hook and leave him to his death.
If Matt decides to jump to safety instead, Emily will fall along with the fire tower, and Matt will not be put in danger, being safe for now.
Chapter 7[]
Though he does not physically appear in this chapter, Emily will repeatedly call out for him in the mines. If Matt died by falling off the cliff, his shoe is able to be found by Emily down the rock slide where Hannah and Beth fell. Upon the possible discovery, Emily will express confusion and question as to why the shoe was found in the mines.
Chapter 8[]
If Emily makes it to the lodge, she will be questioned by Sam, Ashley, and Chris. Ashley and Sam will ask her about Matt's status, and Emily will give them a basic rundown of the events from Chapter 6 until the present time, mentioning Matt throughout her story. Chris can directly ask her about Matt's well-being and Emily will either tell them that Matt fell off a cliff or that he's in the mines, speaking either sadly or coldly about the latter depending on Matt's decision at the fire tower. When Mike enters the lodge, he will ask about Matt after rejoicing with Emily.
Chapter 10[]
If Matt died earlier, his decapitated head will be shown rolling out of Hannah's lair. Sam and Mike will find his body hanging with the other possible corpses of Jessica, Emily, and Chris.
If alive, Matt will not be physically seen again until Chapter 10. Since his last appearance in Chapter 6, he has been wandering through the mines, looking for a way out. If Jessica is still alive, she will suddenly find him and attack him due to her thinking he is one of her attackers. They'll have a small conversation, in which he'll either ask Jessica about the reason as to why she is here, or warn her about the Psycho or the Wendigo (if he encountered the latter himself).
Regardless, upon seeing Jessica's injured state, he will attempt to lead her out of the mines.
Guiding Jessica.
Matt and Jessica will hear a Wendigo behind them, and they can either hide or attempt to run. If Matt chooses to run ahead, Jessica will have her jaw ripped off. If they hide, Matt must hit a QTE to stop Jessica from falling and stand still, otherwise they will both die. After it moves on, they will progress through the cave until the Wendigo begins to pursue them again. Matt can either abandon Jessica to save himself or hide with her. If he chooses to abandon Jessica, she will have her jaw ripped off.
Matt will run to the door and a QTE will appear. If he is successful to hit the QTE, he will be able to lock the door and survive until dawn. If not, the Wendigo will catch his head through the door and push him to the ground, opening the door and smashing his face in. If he chooses to hide together, he and Jessica will run to the edge of a cliff and remain still until the Wendigo leaves. If he moves, they will both die. If he successfully stayed still, Matt and Jessica have survived until dawn. They will look up and see the lodge in front of them.
Matt and Jess survived the night.
If Jessica had been killed in Chapter 4, Matt will wander through the mines alone. Here he will be presented with the same set of choices, though worded differently. He will make it out killed or alive, surviving until dawn.
Credits[]
Matt, along with the others who survived, is questioned by the police about their experiences throughout the night after they're picked up by the helicopters.
- If Matt survived until dawn, he will always allude to not being good enough to save Emily at the fire tower despite trying.
- If Emily died in the lodge in Chapter 10, he will at first be dumbfounded upon discovering the news, and then become outright devastated.
- If Emily was killed by Mike, he will become extremely confused and express denial, claiming it had to be somebody else.
- If Sam, Mike, and Jessica have died, he will talk about how the Psycho killed Josh and he'll once again reflect on the fire tower incident stating that's why they went to get help and the tower fell into the mines. He'll then finally plead with the authorities to investigate the mines.
Matt will also always be mentioned by Emily. This most basic requirement for all of these dialogues is to have Emily survive.
- If Matt survived, and has a good relationship with Emily, she will ask the authorities if they're "done looking at him" and if he knows that she's "devoted to him".
- If Matt survived, and has a bad relationship with Emily, she will call him a few names, and she'll then ask if they're gonna "kick him around a bit for me." She'll then state that he left her to die at the fire tower (regardless if he did or not).
- If Matt died, and had a good relationship with Emily, she will ask the rangers if they found him yet. When they reply that they haven't, she will express regret that she "was such a bitch" and will ask herself if she could have saved him.
- If Matt died, and had a bad relationship with Emily, she will ask the authorities if they found Matt yet. When they reply that they didn't, she will say tell the police to not put effort into looking for him. When asked about the lack of concern, she will state that Matt left her to die at the fire tower (regardless if he did or not).
Possible Deaths[]
| Possible Deaths | |||
| Chapter | Event | Caused by | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Fall from a clifftop | Deer (indirect) | Matt attacks the deer; Matt fails a QTE OR fails to make a choice. |
| Jaw impaled on meathook | Hannah (Wendigo) | Matt does not jump to safety at the second opportunity; Matt does not have the flare gun OR fails the QTE to shoot it. | |
| 10 | Face bashed in | Matt fails a QTE OR fails a Don't Move OR fails to make a choice. |
Killed Victims[]
- A deer (Intentional, direct, determinant)
Matt can chop an elk to death with his axe after the herd corner him and Emily on the clifftop in Chapter 6. If nature is still in balance, there will be one deer that stays in his path. If nature is out-of-balance by both Chris shooting the squirrel and Jessica killing the bird, there will be an additional deer that is more instigating.
- Jessica (Indirect, determinant)
While the pair are running from the Wendigo in the mine, Matt can run ahead or abandon Jessica, resulting in her getting killed by the Wendigo.
Relationships[]
Hannah and Beth[]
Matt was friends with Hannah and Beth. During the prologue, he attended a party put on by Josh and the twins at the Washington Lodge. However, he participates on the prank against Hannah and is responsible for having filmed it. In the remake, after Hannah is humiliated, Matt appears concerned. In bother versions, as Beth goes to find Hannah, she refers to Matt and the others jerks.
As a Wendigo, Hannah can interact with Matt a number of times. If he falls from the cliff and dies, Hannah will drag his body away. If Matt encounters her in chapter 6, she can potentially kill him by smashing his chin through a hook, popping out one of his teeth, and leaving him to choke to death. In chapter 10, she is able to smash his face in with her hands.
In Beth's base stats, Matt is tied with Mike for the sixth rank; they are above Ashley and Emily.
Ashley[]
Matt and Ashley are close friends. In 2014, they both attended the party at the Washington Lodge and spent time together there. In the original game, they are shown together as the group heads upstairs to the guest room. In the remake, a camera roll photo shows them together, and they are shown sitting together and exchanging a smile before the group goes upstairs.
A year later, when Ashley is looking through the binoculars, Matt will playfully prank her then apologize for startling her more than he attended. Ashley can then either let him use a telescope to see Emily and Mike embracing or deter him from looking. If he does see Emily and Mike, Ashley will attempt to reassure him that this probably means nothing. To this, Matt will angrily ask if it's ever nothing with Emily and then storm off, Ashley following after him.
Matt and Ashley will later be seen sitting on the lodge's steps together.
In Matt's base stats, Ashley is tied with Sam for the second rank; they both place after Emily and Jessica. In Ashley's base stats, Matt is ranked second along with Josh; they both place after Chris.
Relationship Increases
- If Matt saw Mike and Emily flirting, challenges Mike, but then apologizes afterwards, his relationship with Ashley will slightly increase.
Relationship Decreases
Chris[]
Chris and Matt are members of the same group of friends. Though they rank low in each other’s stats, they often interact amiably during the game. In the remake of the game’s prologue, a photo indicates that Chris and Matt spent at least some time together at the Washington Lodge party. In Chapter 2, Chris can ask how Matt’s been doing or talk to him about his relationship with Emily. Matt will respond positively or negatively, depending on if he saw Mike and Emily through the telescope. If he reacts negatively though, Chris will be visibly uncomfortable. Chris can also gossip about Matt and Emily's relationship with Josh.
After seeing Josh bisected in the first trap, Chris and Ashley run into Matt and Emily. Matt listens to Chris and tries to calm him down. When Emily returns from her chase, Chris can ask her where Matt is and appears bothered if Emily insults Matt.
In Matt’s base stats, Chris is tied with Mike and Josh for the lowest relationship. In Chris’ base stats, Matt is tied with Jessica for the lowest relationship.

- If Chris is friendly to Matt, his relationship with Chris will slightly increase.
- If Matt saw Mike and Emily flirting, challenges Mike, but then apologizes afterwards, his relationship with Chris will slightly increase.

Emily[]
See Emily and Matt for more information.
Emily and Matt are love interests. During the prologue, they were not yet dating, but both participated in the prank on Hannah. In the remake, Emily briefly interacted with Matt to show him to his place before Hannah arrived. A few months before the group's reunion at Blackwood Pines, Mike broke up with Emily which caused her to begin a relationship with Matt.
When Matt and Emily show up at the mountain together, their relationship is shown to be complicated. While they are sometimes flirty (with the remake showing that Emily even brought some adult materials up to the mountain with them), it is also clear that their relationship is somewhat one-sided. Emily tends to give Matt orders, and he tries to calmly accommodate her. However, Matt is shown to feel insecure about Emily's past relationship with Mike and whether or not she still has feelings for him.
Their relationship can fluctuate based on a number of decisions such as whether or not Matt looked through the telescope, whether or not Matt sides with Emily during her fight with Jessica, their dialogue throughout their time together, and Matt's choices while the fire tower is collapsing. Through these decisions, the player can improve their relationship or make it even more strained.
Eventually, Matt and Emily are separated and the effects of the player's decisions begin to unfold. If Emily returns to the lodge and Chris asks her about Matt, she can respond positively or negatively depending on whether Matt attempted to save her on the tower. In the credits, Emily has several different interviews about Matt, depending on their relationship stat. She can worry about him or show remorse for how she treated him, or she can show that she doesn't care what happened to him. Regardless of their status, Matt will always show grief if Mike shot Emily in the lodge.
In Matt's base stats, Emily and Jess place the highest. In Emily's base stats, Matt and Mike place the highest.

Matt and Jess in the mines.
Matt and Jessica are within the same group of friends. In the prologue, they both attended a party at the Washington Lodge and both pranked Hannah.
A year later, they both return for a reunion at Blackwood Pines. They first interact if Emily and Jessica begin fighting in the lodge. Matt can defend Jessica, increasing their relationship, however she will not respond graciously, claiming he should stay out of the argument and calling him a "dumb oaf" and Emily's "toy."
If both survived their previous death opportunities, they will meet up in the mines. Jessica shows that she is relieved to see Matt and he is shocked by her condition, wondering how she's still alive. Together, they will try to survive an encounter with the Wendigo. Matt can look after Jessica, helping her when she starts to fall and choosing to stay with her as they go towards safety. He can also decide to run ahead, leaving Jessica to be killed by the Wendigo.

Josh[]
Matt and Josh’s interactions range from warm to unfriendly. The remake shows that they spent time together during the party in the prologue, as evidenced by a photo which shows them hanging out with Sam, Chris, and Mike. Matt films the prank pulled on Josh’s sister Hannah. Josh gets ahold of this tape and uses it in his own prank.
A year later, Josh welcomes Matt back to the lodge, and Matt’s response can be friendly or moody depending on whether or not he saw Emily and Mike through the telescope. If he is moody, Josh appears a little offended, asking Chris, “what’s up with him?” If Matt attacks Mike in the lodge, Josh will pull him off Mike and snap at them both. Josh may also break up a fight between Emily and Jessica in which Matt is involved. After whichever fight takes place, Matt offers to help Josh get the fire going.
Josh pranks Matt and Emily by leaving a pig head and threatening letter in the woods. When they hurry back to the lodge, they run into Chris and Ashley who claim Josh has been killed in a saw trap. Josh expresses horror at Josh’s supposed death and, saying he does not want see Josh’s body, prevents Emily from going to check the shed. When Matt and Emily go to the cable car station for help, Josh locks the gate behind them and watches them through the monitors. They arrive at the stations which Josh has trashed to scare them. Matt can mention Josh during his interview, believing he had been killed by the "Psycho" (as he is unaware that Josh actually is the Psycho).
It is possible, based on player choices, for Josh to tell Hill that Matt is his least favorite person in the group. Hill will say that Matt is a nice guy and that he cannot see what’s not to like.
In Matt’s base stats, Josh is tied with Mike and Chris for last. In Josh’s base stats, Matt ranks last.
Relationship Increases
- If Matt saw Mike and Emily flirting, challenges Mike, but then apologizes afterwards, his relationship with Josh will slightly increase.
- If Josh prefers Matt over Emily, his relationship with Josh will slightly increase.

Mike[]
See Matt and Mike for more information.
In the past, Matt and Mike seemed to have been on good terms. During the game's prologue, they both attended a party at the Washington Lodge. The remake indicates, through a camera photo, that they spent time together alongside Josh, Chris, and Sam. They are also depicted having a conversation while the group is sitting in a side room. They both took part in pranking Hannah, with Mike acting as bait and Matt filming the prank.
They both return to Blackwood Mountain for a reunion. While Matt and Emily are heading towards the lodge, Mike jumps out and startles them. Matt reveals that his friendship with Mike as become tense due to awkwardness around Mike being Emily's ex. Matt can either be welcoming towards Mike or more hostile. Matt appears more intimidated by Mike's presence that vice versa. Their interactions may also turn negative if Matt sees Mike embracing Emily in the woods. After this, he will approach Mike in the lodge and their conversation can escalate into a fight with Matt even physically attacking Mike. This will cause their relationship status to drop to zero in the original and decrease significantly in the remake. Matt can then ask Emily what 'she's ever seen in him' and call him a dick. Mike may also complain about Matt to Jessica.
If Emily makes it back to the lodge, Mike will always ask where Matt is, expressing concern. If Emily is shot by Mike, Matt will be shocked and express denial, claiming it had to be someone else killed.
In Matt's base stats, Mike is ranked last along with Chris and Josh. In Mike's base stats, Matt is ranked last along with Ashley.
Relationship Increases
- If Matt welcomes Mike after he scares him and Emily, his relationship with Mike will slightly increase.
- If Matt apologizes after asking Mike why he was talking to Emily, his relationship with Mike will slightly increase in the remake.

Sam[]
Sam and Matt are friends, but not seen directly interacting at all during the game. They appear together—along with Chris, Josh, and Mike—in a picture taken during the party in the prologue. After the prank on Hannah, Sam calls Matt and the others who participated jerks. They can be seen together at the start of Chapter 2, where they possibly talk off-screen when they walk in the opposite direction as Josh and Chris. If Matt falls from the cliff, Sam can ask Emily where he is and will react with disbelief and horror when Emily says that he is dead.
In Matt’s base stats, Sam is tied with Ashley for second, following Jess and Emily in first place. In Sam’s base stats, Matt is tied with Chris, Emily, Josh, and Ashley, placing above Mike and Jessica.

- Matt is one of the four protagonists - the others being Chris, Jessica, and Josh - who may only be killed outside the lodge, meaning that their bodies won't be found unless the police will go down to the mines, which requires at least one protagonist to survive (except Josh).
- Matt's death can be determined by the most factors (4 factors - QTEs, shooting segments, choices and Don't Move segments).
- If Matt and Jessica are killed together in Chapter 10, Matt will always die second. The only exception is when they fail the second Don't Move segment, where the Wendigo first kills Matt and then Jessica.

- Along with Jessica, Matt is the only character who comes to the lodge only once (not counting the Prologue) and never comes back again.
- If Matt encountered the Wendigo in Chapter 6 (and if he survived), assuming Jess is still alive, Matt will be able to warn her about "the monster" as opposed to warning her about The Psycho.
- If Matt fell off the cliff, he'll be the only protagonist to have no knowledge of the Wendigo before dying.
