Emily and Matt is a relationship in Until Dawn.
Overview[]
Emily and Mike were a couple in the prologue, but Mike later ended the relationship in favor of starting a relationship with Jessica. This prompted Emily to begin dating Matt as a rebound.
At the start of the game, there are notable cracks in their relationship. Emily is indicated to be still emotionally attached to her past relationship with Mike, and she can be manipulative and mean-spirited towards Matt at times. Her abrasive, bossy attitude often frustrates Matt while Matt’s lack of situational awareness can anger Emily. However, despite the drama in their relationship, the two have several wholesome, affectionate moments with one another.
Emily and Matt’s relationship depends heavily on the player’s choices. They can possibly maintain a much better relationship throughout most of the game, and—if Matt and Emily end up on good terms—her statement about him in the credits will show she has developed as a person, either by fully moving on from her past relationship and wanting to be devoted to Matt (if he lived) or recognizing she treated him badly (if he died). However, the player can also worsen their relationship beyond repair. Emily can continue to berate and insult Matt throughout the game, and Matt can even lose his temper, becoming cold and demanding towards Emily. If their relationship is poor, Emily can speak callously about Matt during her conversation with Chris, and she will claim she doesn’t care about him during the credits, indicating they’ve broken up.
Until Dawn[]
Chapter 1[]
Emily and Matt arrive at Blackwood Pines together. On their way to the lodge, they run into Mike who scares them. Matt can choose to be nice to Mike and acknowledge their awkward dating situation. He can also choose to confront Mike, which will make Emily impressed by him. However, Emily requests that Matt takes the bags the rest of the way, claiming she just remembered she had to talk to Sam. She will be upset with Matt for not trusting her if he initially refuses, but she will still head off anyway.
Ashley discovers Emily and Mike talking out on the trail and thinks they’re acting too friendly. After Matt pops out at her, she has the option to show him the two in an embrace. If Matt looks, he will become angry. When Ashley tries to reassure him by saying it’s probably nothing, he says, “Is it ever just nothing with Em? Ever?” With newfound distrust of Emily and Mike, Matt storms off and Ashley follows.
Relationship Status[]
- If Matt demands Mike to back off after he scares him and Emily, his relationship with Emily will slightly increase.
- If Matt welcomes Mike after he scares him and Emily, his relationship with Emily will slightly decrease.
- If Matt agrees to take the bags to the lodge, his relationship with Emily will slightly increase.
- If Matt persists about not leaving Emily alone, his relationship with Emily will slightly decrease.
Chapter 2[]
If Matt saw Emily with Mike, he will appear will be noticeably upset to those arriving at the lodge, which Josh will comment on. In an optional conversation with Chris, Matt can either claim his relationship with Emily is great (though it was unexpected) or he can be more uptight, saying: “Some people, you know? You think you know ‘em.”
After everyone arrives at the lodge, one of two fights can take place.
If Matt looked through the telescope, he will approach Mike and demand that he stay away from Emily. If the player continues to have Matt press Mike, their argument will escalate until Matt attacks Mike, placing him in a headlock, and Josh intervenes. If Matt did not look through the telescope or if he backs off his argument with Mike, there will instead be a fight between Emily and Jess:
Emily enters the lodge and sees Mike and Jessica kissing. This annoys her and she comments on it, saying it’s gross and that Jessica is slutty. An argument ensues between them, and Matt can choose whose side to take. If he tells Emily to chill out, she’ll tell him to shut up but defend him when Jessica calls him a "dumb oaf". Eventually, Josh will also break up this argument.
After Jessica and Mike leave, Emily complains about her missing bag, to Matt’s annoyance. He suggests that maybe she just lost it, but Emily assumes that Matt must have left it by the cable car station. She describes it to Matt, saying she bought it on Rodeo Drive next to a store where Matt had “drooled over” a girl at the counter. To this, Matt says that the girl was asking about his jacket, and Emily responds, that the girl didn’t give “a shit about [his] ‘designer’ jacket.“ Matt wants to know why Emily hates his jacket, but Emily finally convinces him to look for her bag together. She promises that afterwards they could get very warm together, implying intercourse.
The next segment is available in the remake. It is available in the original only to people who pre-ordered the game or purchased it on PlayStation Plus.
The two leave the lodge together. If Matt fought Mike, Emily asks him about it, saying she’s never seen him act so aggressively. When he says that Mike was being a prick, she says, “Gentle giant shows a not-so-gentle streak. Local ladies swoon.” Matt can ask what Emily sees in Mike and state that it’s obvious Mike still likes her. To this, Emily will say she wants Matt and that he should stop worrying about Mike. If Emily fought Jessica, he will either sympathize with Emily, asking if she’s feeling better and saying he wants her to have a good time on the trip, or criticize her, saying she should try to stay more calm when people attempt to push her buttons. This annoys Emily.
They head down the trail in search of her bag, and Emily directs Matt down a different path than usual. Emily thanks Matt for helping her find her bag, acknowledging to him that she can be high maintenance. Their conversation becomes flirty, and Matt asks her if she's ever done it outside of his car before. When he clears off the table for them to use, he notices a carving showing “Emily + Mike” inside a heart. This angers him, and he wonders if she led him this way to make him “feel like a chump.” Emily will reassure him that they are together now and Mike is old news. Matt asks what’s so important about Emily’s bag, and she tells him that it contains her lacy panties, and the two start flirting again. The two may find a big totem, and Emily puts her arm in its mouth. Her arm appears to be pulled inside the totem and she screams for help. If Matt pulls her back, she laughs, revealing that she was only pranking him. If he investigates, he will go to the other side of the totem and see her flipping him off.
Finally, the two discover a skewered pig head with a note reading, “WELCOME BACK” attached. This frightens them and Matt wonders if Chris or Josh is pranking them. Suddenly the lights outside shut off, and Emily says she no longer cares about finding her bag. Matt agrees.

Chapter 4[]
Emily and Matt stumble upon Ashley and Chris, who inform them about Josh being sawed in half. Emily demands that they head to the cable car station to get help. Matt will either agree with her or suggest that they should find everyone else (depending on whether or not Matt looked through the telescope). Regardless of the choice, they will still go ahead together to get help.
Chapter 5[]
Emily and Matt head to the station, discussing Josh’s alleged death. Emily wants to check the shed for confirmation, but Matt believes that there are some scenes you can never unsee and convinces Emily to keep going. They arrive at the station but find that it has been trashed, and that the door is locked. Matt will either decide to smash the door down or ask Emily to squeeze through the window. If he decides upon the latter, Emily will only agree is high enough. If it is, she will get into the station and unlock the door for Matt. If he is waiting at the door for her, she will say they both did good. If Matt is not at the door, Emily becomes furious, saying that even the slightest glimmer of her trust in him to protect her has broken down. If Matt decides to break down the door, or if his relationship with Emily is not high enough for her to agree to go through the window, he will use the axe to break into the station. They find that the inside has also been trashed and that the cable car key is missing. While searching the station, Matt points out a fire tower on a map and Emily suggests that they should go there to use the radio. If Matt agrees and had looked through the telescope, Emily will compliment him on learning that “Emily is always right,” but if he agrees and had not looked through the telescope, Emily will sarcastically say he’s smart. Matt will demand to know why she’s being so bitchy to him, and she will tell him to watch it. If he disagrees on going to the tower, Emily will eventually convince him to go despite his initial hesitation. They head towards the tower but are almost backed off the cliff by a herd of deer.

Chapter 6[]
As they are almost backed off the cliff, Matt can either be calm, saying that the deer just want to check them out, or rebuke Emily, telling her to get a hold of herself and let him think. If Matt attacks the deer, Emily will become upset and yell that he’s killing them. The deer then back him off the cliff, and Emily looks on in horror as he tries to climb back up. If he fails, she screams his name and cries for him. If he succeeds in climbing back up the cliff, she offers him her hand and helps him pull himself to safety. If Matt does not attack a deer, the two carefully pass through the herd and to safety.
The two reach and explore the fire tower. Emily can find the missing posters of Hannah and Beth, and say she’s sorry they’re still missing. After finding the flare gun, Emily chooses to either keep the gun or give it to Matt. If Matt agreed with Emily about going to the tower, he will automatically fire the flare. After Emily contacts a park ranger who tells her help will come at dawn, the Wendigo damages the tower and it begins to fall. Emily crashes through a window, either dodging or being hit by the radio, and catches a rail.
After the tower falls into the mines, Matt reaches Emily who is still hanging on to the rail. Frustrated and scared, she yells at Matt, calling him an idiot and telling him to hurry and save her. Matt then gets option to respond supportively or aggressively. If the latter option is chosen and Matt had looked through the telescope, he will demand to know what is going on between Emily and Mike and continue to press her about it, not helping her until she admits something is going on. If he did not look through the telescope, he will insult Emily back and ask why she’s being “such a bitch” to him. Emily will say she didn’t mean it, and, if Matt is insistent, he demand to hear her say she will treat him like a human being. If the player chooses to have Matt respond calmly, he will tell Emily to stop yelling at him so he can find a way to reach her.
Following this, Matt can either choose to save her or jump to safety. If he tries to save her, the tower will fall before he can reach her, and he will call her name in horror. He will fall, land in the mines, and get knocked out. When he wakes up, he calls for Emily desperately and is attacked by the Wendigo. If he did not get the flare gun or fired the flare, he will be killed when the Wendigo rams a hook through his face. If he has the flare and succeeds in shooting the Wendigo, he will survive the encounter.

Chapter 8[]
If Emily returns to the lodge, she will be received by Ashley, Chris, and Sam. The group is eager to know what happened to her and where Matt is. Chris questions her about her experiences. He can ask about Matt. If Matt jumped to safety, Emily will call him a “sack of shit” and say she doesn’t want to talk about him. Chris responds negatively, and she states that Matt abandoned her when she was about to die. If Matt tried to save Emily, she will explain how the tower fell and worry that Matt is dead. If Matt fell off the cliff, she will mournfully tell the others that he died, saying that he “fell so far.”
Credits[]
If Matt survived and his relationship with Emily was low, she will call him "meatbrain" and "Matt the incredible sulk", and ask the interviewers to kick him around a bit for her, claiming that he left her to die on the tower like a "world class douche nozzle.” If Matt survived and his relationship with Emily was high, Emily will exhibit concern, asking if they're done looking at him and if he told them she was his girlfriend. She says how she knows she wasn't his favorite person for a minute or two but hopes he knows how devoted she is to him.
If Matt died and his relationship with Emily was low, Emily tells the police not to look too hard for him. When the interviewer says she does not sound concerned, she claims that he left her to die despite him being her boyfriend, and angrily asks if they would “give a shit” either. If Matt died and his relationship with Emily was high, she asks if they've found him yet. When the interviewer says they haven’t, she accepts that he’s dead and reflects on her poor treatment of him, saying she could have helped him.
No matter what, Matt will reflect on the tower incident, saying he could have done something, and tried to do something, but wasn't good enough. Regardless of his relationship with Emily, he will be distraught if her body was recovered (either if she is killed in the lodge explosion or shot by Mike). If she died in the fire, he will cry. If she was killed by Mike, the interviewer says that she was recovered with a gunshot to the head, and Matt will be in denial, saying it was someone else.
