Understand the palm of my hand, bitch!

— Emily to Ashley

Emily "Em" Davis is one of the eight main protagonists and a playable character in Until Dawn. She was voiced and motion captured by actress Nichole Sakura.

Appearance[]

Emily is a teenage Asian-American girl with shoulder-length black hair styled in a bob and light brown eyes. She has blue eyeshadow and dark purple nails. Over her left eyebrow is a small birthmark.

One Year Ago[]

Emily wears jeans, tall white boots, and a low-collared blue racer jacket over a plain white t-shirt. She has a silver necklace on.

Until Dawn[]

When the group meets up a year later, Emily wears a white blouse — which she mentions costing $600 — underneath a ribbed dark gray turtleneck, covered by the same silver necklace and a black leather jacket with fur trim. Her turtleneck sweater matches her boyfriend Matt's. She completes the look with black jeans, fur-trimmed snow boots, dark purple nail polish, and a few rings.

Damage and other changes[]

Emily’s changes in appearance are as follows:

  • Bloody nose and bruised forehead: hit the fire tower window
  • Mascara smudges and facial lacerations: hit by falling radio (Determinant)
  • Cut leg: hit by falling rock
  • Slashed arm: failed QTE when Wendigo swiped out from the wall (Determinant)
  • Shoulder bite: caught by Wendigo (Determinant)

Personality[]

She really knows what she wants and she manages to get that from whoever it is, whether it be Matt or Mike. You know, she's really driven, and I can definitely relate to that. But also like, this character is so much fun, I really get to play the bitch, and so it was really fun to do that.

— Nichole Sakura on Emily

Emily is described in-game as intelligent, resourceful and persuasive, the latter trait being forthright in the remake. She loves fashion, dislikes not getting her way and dreams of getting a job as style editor for a magazine.[1]

With this passion for fashion and a clear sense of style, Emily enjoys being the center of attention. She's not afraid to drop some serious cash on a piece of designer clothing and also not afraid to let everyone know it. Still, Emily is more than just looks. She also has a shrewd mind, as evidenced by her being an honor roll student with a 4.0 GPA.

Emily has a quick tongue and a penetrating wit, making her known within the group for her swift verbal put-downs. She is adamant in getting her way and is quick to object when someone's line of thinking is not in accordance with her own. This does mean that she can come across as rather arrogant or 'bitchy.' Despite her self-assertive appearance, there are traces of a vulnerable person beneath when she shows remorse over the disappearance of her friends Hannah and Beth,[2] who went missing after Emily and other group members played a prank on the former a year prior. Dr. Hill suggests Emily's tough exterior is merely a front that belies her lack of confidence. This can be seen when she starts a fight with former best friend Jessica, who angered her after she entered a relationship with her ex-boyfriend Mike sometime before the events of the main game. Emily then started dating Matt, though in reality using him as a rebound. Emily is sensitive to rejection and to being questioned, which comes to a head when she seethes at Matt if their relationship status is low.

According to Dr. Hill, Emily's greatest fear is failure, a fear she notably shares with Chris. Despite this presumed fear, she proves to be a very capable individual when pushed. While isolated and forced to rely on her own abilities, she displays physical strength, feats of agility, excellent problem-solving skills, and a cool-headed focus during a time of crisis.

Emily appears to hold grudges. She likes it if Matt threatens her ex Mike and if he argues with her former friend Jessica, her relationship with Matt going up as a result on both occasions. Similarly, Emily displays a vengeful side when endangered by the other characters. When Ashley argues for Emily to leave the basement after discovering a bite wound she believes to be infectious, Emily refuses, and Mike will point a gun at her. When her bite is revealed to be harmless after all, she slaps Ashley and later shoves her when they are chased by Wendigos. She will call out Mike in the police interview for threatening to shoot her. In the same segment, she may also disparage Matt if he jumped to safety and did not try to save her earlier. If he remained on her good side however, she will express concern for his well-being and even admit to her mistreatment of him.

Biography[]

2024[]

Fashionista Emily's dress sense is as sharp as her tongue. Her motivations for returning to the lodge are driven by a desire to drive a wedge between ex-boyfriend Mike and his new partner — and Emily's close friend — Jessica.[3]

2015[]

Emily has a quick tongue and a sharp wit. She's well-known within the group for her withering put-downs, but that does mean that she can come across as a bit of a bitch. Always immaculately dressed, Emily prizes her appearance very highly. She believes that good taste is everything, and isn't afraid of dropping serious cash on clothes and making sure that everyone knows about it.

Emily is currently dating Matt, but only because she's rebounding pretty hard after Mike dumped her a few weeks back.[1]

One Year Ago[]

In the remake[]

Emily is first seen hanging out with Mike, Matt, Ashley, and Sam in the living room. Jessica enters and indicates that their prank on Hannah is in motion, and Emily reacts with surprised delight. After Sam gently attempts to dissuade the group, Jessica defends their actions by arguing that she is just looking out for "her girl Em" since Hannah was making moves on Emily’s boyfriend Mike. Emily smirks and grabs Mike's hands, proclaiming that he is her man. Mike protests, claiming he is "not anyone’s man," and Emily lightheartedly dismisses his objection. She and the other pranksters go upstairs, leaving Sam alone.

Emily smirk

Emily after pranking Hannah.

In the guest room, Emily takes an active role in the prank by directing everyone to their places. She ushers Ashley into the wardrobe and has Matt hide behind a partition from where he can record the encounter. When Mike and Jess eye each other, Emily waves Jessica away and seats Mike in an armchair. She listens at the door for Hannah to approach and then hides under the bed beside Jessica. Hannah enters, speaks with Mike, and begins to unbutton her shirt. Jessica audibly reacts, and though Emily quickly puts her hand to Jessica's mouth to shush her, the prank is exposed. Sam then bursts into the room and flips on the light. The group emerge from their hiding places, and while most seem to visibly regret their role in Hannah's humiliation, Emily smirks. Hannah flees the lodge, and the others follow her to the back door. Beth, noticing the commotion, runs after her sister while Emily calls out, "It was just a prank, Han!"

In the original game[]

Emily is first seen in the kitchen alongside Mike, Jessica, and Sam where the latter two are arguing about the prank about to be performed on Hannah. Sam tries to get the group to rethink their plans, but Jessica refutes Sam's protests and contends that she is just looking out for the best interests of "her girl Em," who is in a relationship with Mike, Hannah's crush. Emily supports Jessica's defense and reaffirms Mike is her man. Mike protests, claiming he is "not anyone’s man," but Emily lightheartedly dismisses his objection and leads the group to the guest room while Sam heads upstairs.

EmilyPrank

"It was just a prank, Han!"

In the guest room, everyone except Mike finds an hiding place. Emily and Jessica conceal themselves under the bed, and Emily hushes her friend's laughter as Hannah approaches. Hannah begins to remove her clothes in front of Mike, and Jessica's laughter exposes the prank. Emily and her friends then reveal themselves to Hannah who dashes out of the room, mortified. The group chase after Hannah to the back deck of the lodge but do not follow her into the forest. As Hannah flees into the woods, Emily calls out after her, insisting it was all just a prank.

Chapter 1[]

A year later, she and the others return to the lodge. Emily and her new boyfriendMatt, begin to walk from the cable car station to the lodge when Mike, who had recently dumped her for Jessica, scares them.

After Mike and Matt have a conversation, Mike walks off toward the cable car station. Emily tells Matt that she remembered she had to talk to Sam and leaves in the direction Mike walked off. Soon afterwards, while Ashley is looking through the telescope, she sees Emily and Mike having a talk. When Matt asks if she sees anything interesting, she can choose to show the two in an embrace, leaving Matt upset.

Chapter 2[]

Back at the lodge, Emily can engage in a quarrel with Jessica, ultimately ending in Jessica and Mike being sent to the guest cabin, and Emily complaining to Matt about her missing bag.

Note: the following segment is included in the extended and pre-order editions of the original game, as well as all versions of the remake.

Emily and Matt remake

Matt and Emily begin to walk back to the cable car station in search for her bag. If Matt fought Mike, Emily will ask him about his motivations behind the attack. If Emily and Jessica fought instead, Matt can either criticize her or tell her that they should start over. They find that the gate leading to the cable car is locked, so they take a detour to take them to the station.

They find a giant totem, which Emily dares Matt to stick his hand into, before seemingly being sucked into it herself. Matt soon realizes that Emily was just playing a prank on him, but they will be interrupted by a loud mysterious noise in the distance. They continue on their path and find a pig's head alongside a bloody note, with the text "welcome back." They then decide to head back to the lodge.

Chapter 3[]

Mike and Jess can find a tree that has Mike and Emily's initials carved on it from a previous winter getaway. Jess will tease Mike about this and say she didn't think he was this sappy. Mike can either admit that he is a sap or deny that he made the carving and pin it on Emily instead.

Chapter 4[]

Emily and Matt stumble upon Ashley and Chris, the latter of whom believed he had just killed Josh in order to save Ashley from one of the Psycho's traps. Emily, now frightened, insists that it is best to find help and heads toward the cable car station with Matt.

Chapter 5[]

Emily and Matt reach the cable car station to find that it has been ransacked. They discover that the cable car is suspended away from the station without a key to operate it, so they head towards a fire tower to radio for help. They are pushed back by a herd of deer to the edge of the cliff where Hannah and Beth fell a year before.

Chapter 6[]

Emily manages to get past the deer and, with or without Matt, ventures to the radio tower to signal for help. In the remake, she may find a mysterious whistle on her way to the fire tower, which emits an elk call if she blows into it. Upon arriving, Emily switches on the power and may also find a flare gun, which she will either keep to herself or give it to Matt if he is with her. She contacts the Park Ranger Service, and the ranger on duty promises to dispatch help to the lodge, but because of the inclement weather it will not arrive until dawn.

Suddenly, the cable supports to the tower are cut by a Wendigo, which causes the tower to fall. Emily falls out of one of the tower's windows. The tower catches on fire, falls over, and slides downwards into the mines where it then collapses into itself. If Matt is still alive, he will find her holding on to a part of the tower and will attempt to help her up. If Matt sided with Jessica during the argument, she will show aggression towards him. Matt may reassure her, but can also confront her about her feelings towards Mike or about her demeanor towards him. He will then decide to try to save Emily or jump to safety, but she will fall regardless of his decision.

Chapter 7[]

Emily survived (remake)

Emily survived her fall.

Emily is shown to have survived her fall due to a rope catching her foot, suspending her upside down. After swinging to a ledge, her knee will be injured when the tower collapses deeper into the mines. She explores the mines looking for Matt and an exit, possibly finding clues about the disappearance of Beth and Hannah on her way.

During that time she will hear mysterious screeches and see flames coming from a flamethrower. She eventually makes her way to the elevator. After stepping out, she comes into contact with the Stranger, whom she believes to be the killer, and hides from. Emily is either caught, or attempts to make a run for it, but her path eventually leads to a dead end, where the Stranger tries to find and assist her, despite her initial impression of him.

Chapter 8[]

Emily escapes zip line

Escaping death.

After discovering no way out, she soon encounters the Stranger who, as a Wendigo attacks, reveals himself to be friendly despite her protests for him to get away. She is given a bag of flares and falls down deeper into the mines as the Stranger keeps the Wendigo at bay. She will try to find another way out but is quickly attacked by the Wendigo.

During her escape, Emily may be killed by having her eyes gouged out. She is chased into a mine elevator which takes her to the above ground mining facility. She scrambles up a conveyor belt with a Wendigo on her tail, during which she may fall into an ore grinder from the conveyor belt and be killed. If she survives, she may be bitten if she gave Matt the flare gun, shot the flare to signal for help, or never found it in the first place. She escapes the Wendigo by either falling or zip lining down the ridge back towards the lodge where she finds safety with the others.

Emily, in shock of what had just occurred, struggles to explain the situation to the other members. Chris may ask her what happened or be concerned about her or Matt's well-being, but their conversation will quickly be interrupted when someone bangs on the door. At this point, the Stranger enters the lodge and explains the Wendigo to them. Emily waits with Sam, Mike, and Ashley, while Chris attempts to retrieve Josh from a shed outside.

Emily basement 2024

Emily cowers in fear when Mike considers shooting her.

Once Chris returns without Josh or doesn't return at all, the group hides in the basement where Ashley may discover Emily's bite. If so, they worry that it may be contagious. Ashley claims that the Stranger told them that being bitten by a Wendigo will transform you into one. Mike agrees with Ashley and demands Emily to leave the room. Upon her refusal, he picks up the revolver and aims it at Emily's head. He can either shoot her in the eye or say that he can't go through with it and put down the gun.

Ashley picks up The Stranger's Journal and begins to read through it. On the final page, she discovers that the Wendigo's bite is, in fact, not infectious. If she reveals to the group that Emily is going to be safe, and Emily survived the previous encounter, she becomes angered at the thought of her almost dying for no reason and slaps Ashley.

Chapter 9[]

Emily, along with Sam, Ashley, and potentially Chris, try to locate Mike by heading through the lodge tunnel to the Sanatorium. The group soon discovers that Mike locked the door behind him, and they travel through the mines upon Ashley's suggestion. As Sam asks who wants to descend into the tunnels first, Emily replies "after you." She and Sam, and possibly Ashley and Chris, find a huge rock wall blocking their path. Emily, still recovering from her earlier time in the mines, turns around and heads back to the lodge with the rest of the survivors while Sam climbs up a rock wall.

Chapter 10[]

Group Lodge Burn

Emily and the other survivors watch the lodge burn.

If Emily had died while attempting to escape from the Wendigo, her body will be found hanging along with Chris, Jessica and Matt (if they had died before this point), and the Stranger when Sam and Mike visit the Wendigo's lair. If the Wendigo had caught her and gouged her eyes out, her body will be whole. If she fell into an ore grinder and died, her body will be hanging from head to stomach. If Emily was shot by Mike, her body will not be found with the other corpses.

If alive, Emily and whoever is left all flee from the basement to the lobby floor as the Wendigos chase after them, only to be stopped in their tracks by another Wendigo waiting for them. If Ashley concealed the truth about Emily's bite, or if she wasn't bitten at all, Emily will be the last one to leave. However, if Ashley reassured Emily, she will push Ashley into the wall, putting her at risk and making her the last one to leave. If Chris and Ashley ran outside the lodge first and Sam failed the first Don't Move challenge while succeeding the second Don't Move challenge, Emily will be threatened by a Wendigo. Sam here has the option of either saving Emily or running to the switch.

If Sam does nothing, Emily will be attacked by the Wendigo and have her eyes gouged out. If Sam chooses to run to the switch too early, Emily and the remaining members of the group (Mike and Ashley) will die in the explosion. If successful, Emily runs outside the lodge before the lodge explodes, killing all the Wendigos inside. She and the others that survived watch the lodge burn as the sun rises in the background, and a rescue helicopter is seen approaching them for pickup.

Emily Interview Remake

Original[]

Until Dawn™ 20150827214341

After the survivors are picked up, they are interviewed by the police. The number and nature of her interviews depend on the choices made.

  • If Emily was bitten, she angrily tells them that Mike pointed a gun at her and almost shot her.
  • If her relationship with Matt is high and Matt died, she will express remorse over not treating him better.
  • If her relationship with Matt is high and Matt survived, she asks if they are done looking at him and hopes that Matt still wants to be her boyfriend despite her being a "bitch" to him.
  • If her relationship with Matt is low and Matt died, she will tell the police to not put an effort into looking for him because he abandoned her at the radio tower (regardless of whether he tried to save her or not, or if he fell from the cliff).
  • If her relationship with Matt is low and Matt survived, she will tell the police to be rough with him since he left her for dead (regardless of whether he tried to save her or not).
  • If Sam, Mike, Jessica and Matt have all died and she found Beth's head, she will explain the Wendigo to the police and report about her discoveries in the mines, most notably Beth's head. Once asked about Josh by the interviewers, she will state that Josh is most likely dead and that his body is probably in the mines.

She may also be mentioned by Matt and Mike.

  • If Matt survived the night while Emily died in the lodge, he will learn of her demise and will be extremely dumbfounded before breaking down.
  • If Matt survived the night while Emily was killed by Mike, he will learn of her demise and will be very confused.
  • If Mike survived the night and killed Emily, he will confess to murdering her but will try to defend his position by claiming that she was infected and that he needed to stop her.
  • Additionally, if Matt survives the night, he will always allude to not being good enough to save Emily at the fire tower.

Possible Deaths[]

Possible Deaths
Chapter Event Caused by Conditions
8 Eyes gouged out Hannah (Wendigo) Emily doesn't start the elevator OR fails QTEs to outrun the Wendigo after she exits the elevator.

Shot in the eye Mike Emily was bitten; Mike completes the QTE to shoot Emily in the basement.
10 Eyes gouged out Hannah (Wendigo) Chapter 8 - Ashley did not reveal the truth about the bite OR Emily was not bitten.

Chapter 10 - Chris and/or Ashley is still alive; Sam fails the first "Don't Move" segment OR does nothing to save Mike; Sam does nothing when given the option to save Emily.

Burned alive Sam Emily is still inside the lodge; Sam runs to the switch (impossible if Emily is first in line to exit the lodge).

Killed Victims[]

  • Ashley (Indirect, determinant)

If Emily was bitten and spared by Mike and Ashley revealed the truth about her bite in Chapter 8, Emily will push Ashley in Chapter 10 when they are running out of the basement from the Wendigos. Ashley will then be behind Emily in line to leave the lodge, and can die at the hands of the Wendigo or if Sam runs to the switch when Ashley is still inside. While Emily does not kill Ashley directly, the Butterfly Effect Once Bitten states that her push contributed to Ashley's death.

Relationships[]

Hannah and Beth[]

When alive, Hannah wasn't taken seriously by Emily, who was dating the guy Hannah had a crush on - Mike. Emily was quick to agree with Jessica's idea of the prank, before becoming an enthusiastic and active participant. In the remake, she assigns the pranksters to their respective hiding places, and after an upset Hannah storms out of the room, Emily is seen smirking with satisfaction. In both versions of the game, she later dismissively calls out "it was just a prank, Han!" Beth calls Emily, along with Ashley, Jessica, Matt, and Mike, jerks for pranking her sister. However, while Emily does not talk about her involvement in the prank a year later, she will show remorse for their disappearance after finding clues about the sisters in the fire tower and mines. Emily may find Beth's head in the latter location, leading her to later inform her friends and possibly the police.

Regardless of this, Hannah, as a Wendigo, will stalk Emily in the mines before eventually chasing her down. If caught, Hannah will grab Emily's face and stare at her momentarily while hissing, before sadistically gouging her eyes out.

In Beth's base stats, Emily is ranked last, along with Ashley.

Ashley[]

Emily and Ashley are neutral friends at the start of the game. Emily will comfort Ashley if Chris died while trying to go back to the lodge. However, their friendship may be severely damaged if Ashley argues to exile Emily from the basement after the survivors notice that Emily had been bitten. If Emily finds out that the Wendigo bite is harmless, she will respond by initially slapping Ashley, then later pushing Ashley out of the way when the survivors are escaping from the lodge basement during the final Wendigo attack. That being said, if Emily got shot by Mike, Ashley will seem frightened by him as she is seen stepping away after he tries comforting her.

In Emily's base stats, Ashley is tied with Chris and Josh, above Jess, but below Matt, Mike, and Sam. In Ashley's base stats, Emily is tied with Jess. She is placed above Mike, but below the rest.

Relationship Decreases

  • If Emily was bitten but wasn't shot by Mike and Ashley tells the truth about the bites, her relationship with Ashley will drop to zero in the original game, and decrease significantly in the remake.

Chris[]

Emily and Chris are members of the same friend group, but don’t seem particularly close. Chris is interested in Emily’s relationship drama and asks Josh about what’s going on with Mike, Emily, and Matt. Later, he can optionally ask Matt about his relationship with Emily. The two first interact after Josh’s “death,” when Chris and Ashley run from the shed and cross paths with Emily and Matt. Emily will suggest that Chris and Ashley to get everyone else together as she and Matt go for help. Here, Chris can accuse her of only wanting to save herself, while Emily argues she doesn’t want to be hasty and get more people killed.

Chris and Emily show concern for each other throughout the game. If Emily arrives at the lodge after completing chase, Chris will hurry to help let her in and ask her about her experiences. After Chris arrives back in the safe room after attempting to save Josh, Emily will show concern, and she will be distressed if Chris dies on his way back. If Emily was bitten and Chris is alive at that point, he will support the idea of Emily leaving the basement, due to not wanting to face another Wendigo after only just surviving one. However, he will react poorly if Mike decides to shoot Emily; his relationship with Mike will drop severely.

Chris and Emily share the same fear, the fear of failure. In the remake, a digital photo shows that Emily and Jess had pranked Chris by drawing on his face as he slept, indicating that Emily does sometimes act playfully towards Chris.

In Emily's base stats, Chris is tied with Ashley and Josh, above Jess, but below Matt, Mike, and Sam. In Chris' base stats, Emily ranks above Jess and Matt, but below the rest.

Jessica[]

See Emily and Jessica for more information.

Jess and Emily fight 2024

Jessica and Emily during their catfight.

During the prologue, Jessica and Emily were close friends, which Jessica indicates when she claims that she's pranking Hannah in order to "look out for her girl Em" who is dating Mike, Hannah's crush. However, ironically, Jessica also appears to have some attraction towards Mike. In the remake, Emily spots Jessica and Mike making eyes at each other and waves Jessica away. During the prank, they hide under the bed together, giggling. In the remake, Emily covers Jessica's mouth to stifle her laughter.

The year after, they have developed an antagonistic relationship due to events that happened shortly before the group's reunion. Attracted to Jessica's fun-loving personality, Mike dumped Emily. Jessica began dating him, explaining the situation to Sam and Chris as uncomplicated: "Em's out. I'm in." While Emily feels betrayed by Jessica's actions and describes them as "slutty," Jessica feels that Emily's behavior is incendiary and meddlesome and tells Mike that "Emily's as dumb as she looks if she thinks she can cut in on what we got going on." In the lodge, Emily and Jessica may have an argument about Mike, and Matt can side with either Emily or Jessica. While talking to Mike, Jessica calls Emily a whore and tells him that she hopes Emily gets eaten by a bear.

In both Emily's and Jessica's stats, they rank last.

Josh[]

Emily is the only protagonist who doesn't directly interact with Josh throughout the game. During the prologue, she participated in the prank which caused the disappearance of his sisters. However, he invites her back to the lodge the following year and counts her among the group’s “four lovely ladies” in a conversation with Chris. In the lodge, he will become angry if Emily engages in an argument with Jessica and say that they didn’t come back to the lodge to fight. Josh, as part of his Psycho prank, leaves a pig head—along with a threatening note—on the trail which Emily and Matt to find. When Chris and Ashley tell Emily about Josh’s “death,” Emily reacts with disbelief and wonders if she and Matt should check the shed to confirm the story. However, Matt convinces her not to, saying there are some things people can’t unsee. When Emily and Matt go to the cable car station for help, Josh locks the gate behind them, watching them through monitors. Emily and Matt arrive at the station to find that it has been sinisterly trashed, something Josh had done to frighten them. In the ending interviews, Emily can tell the police that Josh is in the mines, likely dead.

If the player chooses Emily as Josh's least favorite member of the group, Hill will guess that Emily is a little bitchy for Josh’s tastes. However, he'll point out that Josh is shares a similarity with Emily because they both mask their lack of confidence with overconfidence.

In Emily’s base stats, Josh is tied with Chris and Ashley, placing only above Jess. In Josh’s base stats, Emily is tied with Mike, placing only above Matt.

Relationship Increases

Relationship Decreases

  • If Josh doesn't prefer Emily over Matt, her relationship with Josh will slightly decrease.

  • Matt[]

See Emily and Matt for more information.

    Emily in the lodge

Emily and Matt began dating sometime after Mike left her for Jessica. Throughout the game, Emily is shown to be rather inconsiderate to her new boyfriend. Whenever she insist on something, Matt complies, as she lets him carry her bags and persuades him to look for her missing bag.

Matt will think that Emily was cheating on him with Mike if Ashley lets Matt see them hugging through a telescope. Furthermore, attempting to rescue her from the toppled radio tower, he can choose to confront her over her ex, and his persistence can get Emily to reassure him she and Mike are done. Despite this, Matt has the option to risk his own life to save Emily, or jump to his own safety during the radio tower collapse.

By the end of the game, Emily may show concern over his well-being. If Matt died while trying to save her, she will feel guilt for not treating him better and not doing enough to save him. If he survived and they had a positive relationship, she will ask the interviewers about Matt and worries that he may not know how "devoted" she is to him. If they didn't have such a positive relationship, however, Emily doesn't seem too concerned and will berate him for 'abandoning' her.

In Emily's base stats, Matt and Mike place the highest. In Matt's base stats, Emily and Jess place the highest.

  • Mike[]

See Emily and Mike for more information.

Mike and Emily are exes, having dated before the events of the main game. During the prologue, Emily is protective of her relationship with Mike, and condones the prank because Hannah has an obvious crush on him. In the remake, she spots Mike and Jessica together and crossly waves Jessica away.

Nearly a year later, just before the group's reunion, Mike breaks up with Emily in order to date Jessica and, as a reaction, Emily begins a relationship with Matt. Mike's relationship with Emily appears slightly stained over certain things, such as when Mike jumps out at her and Matt, perceiving this to be a harmless joke while Emily becomes irritated. However, they appear to still be on good terms overall. Mike may defend Emily to Jessica, saying the breakup was hard on her and that Jessica brings out the worst in Emily. If Emily returns from her chase, Mike will embrace her with relief. In chapter 1, the two meet alone in the woods to talk and hug which both Ashley and Matt find too affectionate due to the pair's new relationships. If Matt saw Emily and Mike embracing through the telescope, he will confront mike about it, and Mike can say that he doesn't want anything to do with Emily or that they were only catching up. Emily may also become angry after seeing Jessica kissing Mike on the sofa and believes that Jessica is trying to flaunt the relationship.

In the safe room, Mike and Emily discuss the group's situation with Sam. If Emily was bitten earlier, Ashley will point out the injury. Mike, believing the bite to be infectious, will tell Emily that she must leave in order to preserve the security of the safe room. He will ultimately consider shooting Emily. If he does, he expresses horror at what he did but tells the others that they're all safe now. During his interviews, he will tell an officer that the situation was confusing and that he thought he had to kill Emily to prevent her from changing. If Emily is threatened but not killed, she will angrily tell an officer that Mike almost shot her and says she thought she knew him.

In Emily's base stats, Mike and Matt equally are the highest. In Mike's base stats, Emily is second, slightly behind Jessica.

    Relationship Decreases

    • If Emily was bitten and Mike spares her after pointing the gun at her, her relationship with Mike will drop to zero in the original game, and decrease significantly in the remake.

    Sam[]

Sam and Emily generally get along well and appear together, alongside Mike and Hannah, in the Prom Night Photo. Although Sam was angry with Emily for her involvement in the prank, the two are back on good terms when they return to the lodge, as seen by their relationship statuses. In the remake, Sam may find a shopping bag full of adult materials and sigh, muttering "Ah, Emily." In both versions of the game, Emily claims she has to go talk to Sam in order to convince Matt to take the bags to the lodge alone. If Emily makes it back from the mines during Chapter 8, Sam and Ashley will help get her to a couch and attentively listen to her story.

In the safe room, Emily and Sam go over the group's options with Mike. When the others panic over Emily’s bite, Sam is the one to defend her, saying they don’t know for sure that the bites are infectious. When Mike threatens to shoot Emily, Sam attempts to calm him down. If Emily is shot, Sam cries out in horror and her relationship with Mike plummets. If Mike does not shoot and Ashley reveals the truth about the bites, Sam will assure Emily that she'll be fine. In the remake, Sam will approach Emily to see if she’s okay, and Emily will hold up her hand and shake her head.

In Emily’s base stats, Sam is second after Mike and Matt who are tied. In Sam’s base stats, Emily is tied with Ashley, Chris, Josh, and Matt, placing above Jessica and Mike.

    Trivia[]

    Playability[]

    • Emily is the seventh protagonist able to be played.

      • She also has 3 playable segments: one in Chapter 6, one in Chapter 7, and one in Chapter 8.
      • This makes her the protagonist with the second least playable segments, tied with Jess.
        • However, Emily's playable sections are much longer, and one of Jessica's playable segments is determinant.
    • Emily, along with Mike, Chris, Josh and Ashley, appears in 9 chapters.
    • Emily is the only character who does not have a playable segment after Chapter 8.
    • Emily and Chris are the only protagonists who can't be played twice in one chapter.

      • In the remake, Emily can find five totems.

    Clues []

    (See: Clues found by Emily)

    • Emily can find the fifth most clues out of all the protagonists, with twelve.
      • Emily can find 0 clues in the Mystery Man Clueline, 8 clues in Twins Clueline, and 4 clues in 1952 Clueline.
      • Emily can find the most clues in the Twins Clueline.

    Facts[]

    • Her dream job is a magazine style editor.
    • She is voted most likely to work on Wall Street.[5]
    • In ten years, she sees herself 'smashing through the glass ceiling.'[5]
    • Emily loves fashion and hates not getting her way.
    • Emily's favorite quote is by Eleanor Roosevelt: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face."[5]
    • Her highest traits are curious, brave and funny.
    • Her intermediate traits are honest and romantic.
    • Her lowest trait is charitable.
      • Emily is the least charitable out of all the protagonists.
    • Her highest base relationship statuses are with Matt and Mike.
    • Her lowest base relationship status is with Jessica.
    • Emily has a fear of failure, according to Dr. Hill.
    • Emily, along with Sam and Mike, is affected by 5 Butterfly Effect segments.
      • This makes them the third least affected protagonists.

    Deaths[]

    • Emily is the third protagonist who can die.
    • Emily has the most diverse deaths out of all characters, with 4 different ways to die.
    • She is the only character that can be killed in multiple ways, but can be killed by a Wendigo only one way.
    • Emily is one of the four characters to have more than one way of death, the other three being Mike, Matt and Ashley.
      • Emily and Matt are the only protagonists whose death may not be caused by a Wendigo or another protagonist (in Emily's case, falling into a grinder mill).
      • Ashley and Emily share two deaths: being incinerated in the lodge and having their eyes gouged out by a Wendigo. They are also the only characters who can die both in the mines and in the lodge.
    • If Emily was killed by a Wendigo in Chapter 8, her corpse will be the only one that does not get decapitated. However, if she died in the grinder, her corpse will be shown to have lost the bottom half of her body.
      • If Emily was killed in Chapter 8, her body will erroneously not be shown in the Epilogue in Josh's lair if he becomes a Wendigo, despite her corpse appearing in Chapter 10.
    • Emily is one of the six protagonists - the others being Chris, Josh, Jessica, Mike and Ashley - who can be killed by another protagonist. In Emily's case, Mike can shoot her in the eye, and Sam can do nothing when Emily is threatened by a Wendigo, or set the lodge on fire while Emily is inside in Chapter 10.

    Trophies[]

    • In the original game, she has two trophies relating to her:
      • "Let eM In," given when Mike allows Emily to stay in the basement.
        • This is a reference to the film Let Me In.
      • "The Exorcism of Emily," given when Mike shoots Emily.
        • This is a reference to the film The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
    • In the remake, she has three:
      • ”Lodge Fever,” given when Matt and Emily start separate confrontations in the lodge.
        • This is a reference to the film Cabin Fever.
      • “Just Breathe,” given when Emily or Matt use the flare gun to successfully defend against an attacker.
        • This is a reference to the film Don’t Breathe.
      • “Talk to eM,” given when Emily slaps Ashley after the truth was revealed.
        • This is a reference to the film Talk to Me.

    Other[]

    • Emily can affect one chapter title: Chapter 4.
    • Emily is the protagonist whose survival can be guaranteed earliest in the story. If Emily was bitten by the Wendigo, Chris died when looking for Josh, Mike did not shoot Emily and Ashley told the truth about the bite, Emily is guaranteed to survive by the end of Chapter 8.
    • Emily is the first group member to encounter the Stranger (directly).
    • Emily has the first line in the game.
      • Emily is the only character with the possibility to say the first and last lines in the game.
    • Emily comes from a wealthy background, as she grumbles about burning a 600 dollar shirt and mentions shopping on Rodeo Drive.
    • In order to achieve all of Emily's outcomes in the Credits, you will need to complete four playthroughs, the most out of all the protagonists.
    • Emily is the favorite character of Will Byles (the game's executive creative director), Tom Heaton (design director), Will McNally (narrative designer of the remake) and Meaghan Martin (Jessica's actress).[6][7][8]
      • In an interview for GameInformer, Will Byles commented on Emily, saying: "Emily is my favorite character and has, depending on your choices, the best character arc of them all. She starts off appearing very superficial and irritating, but consider for a moment her position in the group. She was part of the "alpha" couple the year before but is now rejected by Mike in favor of Jessica; she has some unfinished business with him. So Matt may be not her ideal guy and maybe she's trying to put a strong face onto things. She ends up, despite getting a hard time from everyone – and if she survives – one of the saviors of the night."
    • Jez Harris, the production manager of the game, discussed Emily at a few points during the Halloween livestream, saying that he finds her "quite annoying" and that she definitely isn't his favorite character, but that he agrees with Tom Heaton about her being complex.
    • Emily's actress, Nichole Sakura, is credited in the original game by her stage name Nichole Bloom. In 2020, she changed Bloom to Sakura, her original middle name, in order to honor her mother and Japanese heritage.[9] The credit was updated in the 2024 remake to reflect this change.
    • If Matt saw Emily and Mike through the telescope and chooses to be insistent with Emily at the fire tower, she responds that she was "confused" and he accuses her of sleeping with Mike. However, the developers have since clarified in a Twitch livestream that Mike did not cheat on Jessica with Emily, thus Emily did not cheat on Matt with Mike.
      • However, it appears as though the “I was confused” dialogue is carryover from an earlier draft of the game in which Emily was likely cheating on Matt. Some unused dialogue during the fire tower scene reveals an extended version of Matt and Emily’s conversation in which Emily further admits to cheating.
    • In an early PlayStation 3 build, Emily originally accompanied Sam to search the mines for Josh. She was replaced by Mike in the final version.
      • She also accompanied Mike in the Sanatorium, which was also changed later.
    • She is one of the five protagonists - the others being Ashley, Matt, Mike and Sam - who can get another protagonist killed. In Emily's case, she can push past Ashley in Chapter 10, which puts Ashley at higher risk.
    • Emily's appearance also underwent multiple changes during development:
      • She was originally Caucasian in the PS3 iteration, but was later changed to Asian-American.
      • In the PS4 alpha, Emily did not wear mascara or eyeshadow, and her hair became slightly messier after her escape from the mines (this alternate hairstyle can still be seen in the some of the "Previously On" segments).
      • Emily’s original character model in the PS4 alpha version originally had brunette hair with blonde highlights, but the developers later changed this to black.
    • Emily and Jessica's catfight originally was much longer and a lot of dialogue was cut. For example, Jessica brings up that Emily was still trying to seduce Mike via risqué selfies after their breakup. The full fight can be listened to here.
    • Emily’s shopping bags from a lingerie store in Los Angeles named “Booty Cali” can be found by Sam or Chris in Chapter 1 of the remake, in her and Matt's car. Handcuffs poke out of the bag, and body wash, night cream, sulphur pills and a banana can be seen scattered around the car seat.[10]
      • Additionally, a softlock bug reveals Emily’s lost bag from Rodeo Drive with lingerie in it.[11]
        • Unused dialogue confirms that the developers originally intended for Matt and Emily to find her bag while looking for it, and it was likely stolen as part of Josh's prank.
    • In the remake, Mike now has two chances to shoot Emily if she was bitten. If he spares her, Sam will try to reassure her as Emily gestures she needs some space.
    • Emily has been cosplayed by a member of the Ballistic Moon development team. Face paint was used to depict her gunshot death.[12]
    • There are multiple interpretations for why Emily went back to Blackwood Mountain for the reunion. While her official Sony Bio for the remake states it was to break up Jessica and Mike, Will Byles has explained that she returned based on a feeling of obligation because the trip was presented as a memorial for Hannah and Beth.[13]
      • Byles goes on to say it is very hard on her to be up there, at the same place as last year, and to watch Mike with Jessica while she [Emily] is now in a relationship with Matt that is "not a real relationship," but instead a means to "save face."
