Whoa whoa whoa... Is this what he was feeding them?!

Mike

The Bear Trap is an item that can be uncovered by Mike in Chapter 5 of Until Dawn.

Overview[]

In chapter five, when Mike enters the operating room of the Sanatorium, he may approach a bloody arm waving back and forth on a table. If he grabs the tag attached to the arm, the trap will spring, catching his fingers in the bear trap.

If caught, Mike may either attempt to break the trap with his machete or to amputate his fingers. Meanwhile, the player sees that he is being watched.

Trap untriggered

The trap with the bait, before it is set off.

If Mike decides to pry open the trap, he will break part of the machete without retrieving his hand. If he tries again, he is once more unsuccessful and loses more of the machete. After the third attempt to open the trap, he will free his fingers.

Mike can also amputate his fingers. If none of the machete is broken, he will perform the amputation easily, with one cut. If the machete is partially broken, he will need two cuts. If the machete has been broken twice, Mike will need to saw through his fingers.

Two trophies are directly earned through the bear trap. “Scream Too!” in the original game is achieved by amputating Mike’s fingers at any point. “Saw That Coming” from the remake is achieved if Mike breaks the machete twice trying to open the trap and then decides to saw off his fingers.

This trap is part of the butterfly effect "At What Price."

Trivia[]

  • The trap was set by the Stranger. It is referenced in the “Combat” section of The Stranger's Journal. Because the Stranger would rather not kill Wendigos (as this frees their spirits from their bodies), he captures them using traps baited with human limbs. A mechanism makes the limbs move which can be seen in a Wendigo's motion vision. When triggered, the bear trap will incapacitate the Wendigo.
    • Two of the game's developers, Tom Heaton and Jez Harris, also confirmed that the Stranger set this trap.
  • A similar item, the triggered bear trap, can be found in The Quarry, another game by Supermassive Games.
    • Upon discovering the triggered bear trap, Dylan says, "something like that can really take your hands off,” likely a reference to Mike amputating his fingers.
  • This trap is referenced in the Until Dawn movie. While running through the woods, Clover triggers a bear trap with her foot and eventually uses it to fight off a Wendigo (her sister Melanie).
    • David Sandberg, the director of the Until Dawn movie, referenced this in an AMA, saying the movie does not have anyone shooting Wendigos with shotguns like the game, but that it does have a bear trap.[1]
