Until Dawn was originally developed as a PlayStation 3 first-person game with PlayStation Move support. A Beta version was unveiled and promoted at Gamescom in 2012. However as the project advanced, Supermassive Games reconfigured the game to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive, with many of the game's mechanics changing between the initial Beta and the 2015 launched version.

Character Changes[]

In addition to having changed many of the game's mechanics, they have also changed a lot of the actors who play the main characters (except Mike and Chris), resulting in their appearance having a big difference from the final game version. The actors who play the characters in this version of the game are unknown.

Sam[]

Sam wore a black leather jacket with white accents over a purple shirt, a red scarf, a red plaid skirt, black pantyhose, gray boots and a fur hat.

In the final version of the game, Sam's hair is tied up and the white details of her jacket have been removed.

Samantha's original voice/mocap actress was Megan Raye Manzi. She was then replaced by Hayden Panettiere for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Mike[]

Mike wore a flannel jacket under a dark blue vest, a white tank top and cyan pants with yellow stripes on the sides. In a game trailer and in some videos found in the archives of an old version of the game, he had lighter skin and his hair seemed to be a little longer.

In the final version of the game, he had combed black hair and a stubble.

Mike's original voice/mocap actor has always been Brett Dalton, whether on the final PS4 release or the PS3 beta.

Jessica[]

Jessica wore a blue parka jacket, a purple top, a white T-shirt and baggy purple pants, her blond hair with two simple braids. In some videos found in the files of a prototype, she was seen wearing a gray cap.

Jessica's original voice/mocap actress was Tracy Weiler. She was then replaced by Meaghan Martin for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Matt[]

Matt was wearing a blue and white Letterman jacket with an L on the right side and appeared to be wearing blue jeans. He looked older than the other characters and had shaved black hair. He also wore black fingerless gloves.

In the final version of the game, he wore brown pants and his hair went from shaved to short black hair, and is visibly younger. His gloves were removed.

Matt's original voice/mocap actor was Gilbert Glenn Brown. He was then replaced by Jordan Fisher for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Emily[]

Emily was seen wearing a denim hooded jacket over a black sweater and a gray necklace. She had short brown hair and appeared to be Caucasian.

In the final version of the game, Emily went from a Caucasian teenager to an Asian one and now has black hair instead of brown, her jacket has gone from a denim jacket to a black leather jacket and her sweater is now gray.

Emily's original voice/mocap actress was Rachel Oyama. She was then replaced by Nichole Bloom for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Ashley[]

Ashley wore a blue coat over a gray hood, a red shirt, blue denim shorts, dark leggings, brown boots, a pair of red-striped fingerless gloves, a green rectangular ring on her right middle finger and a silver medallion and a red cap. She had short black hair. In the final version of the game, Ashley's clothes are identical and now she has long orange hair.

According to the developers, Ashley was originally supposed to be a ''drug addict who goes around the house pretending she's in an Agatha Christie novel". This was referenced in the original game.

Ashley's original voice/mocap actress was Melissa Benoist. She was then replaced by Galadriel Stineman for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Chris[]

Chris was seen as a blond teenager with black glasses, a blue jacket over a green sweater, jeans and brown shoes.

In the final version of the game, Chris has exactly the same clothes and looks.

Chris' original voice/mocap actor has always been Noah Fleiss, whether on the final PS4 release or the PS3 beta.

Josh[]

Josh was seen wearing a yellow vest over a plaid jacket, a brown shirt and jeans, he also wore a white wool hat, he had black hair and a clean shave.

In the final version of the game, he wears the same clothes but now his beard is less visible.

Josh's original voice/mocap actor was Michael Charles Roman. He was then replaced by Rami Malek for the switch to the final PS4 version.

Hannah[]

Hannah was seen wearing a black tank top, black jeans and black boots. She had very short black hair.

In the final version of the game, she now wears a black lacy blouse, blue jeans and brown boots. Her hair is now shoulder-length.

Hannah's original voice/mocap actress was Megan Prescott. She was then replaced by Ella Lentini for the switch to the final PS4 version.

The Psycho wore a pale blue shirt and a brown sweater under a dark blue jumpsuit with various bloodstains, he also wore a large scarecrow mask.

In the final version of the game, he wore the same clothes, only his mask was replaced by a mask with the face of a clown.

The Stranger[]

Jack Fiddler (Better known as The Stranger) was a bald old man with brown eyes who wore thick clothes, which consisted of a large green hooded jacket over a brown sweater, a blue bandana, a necklace, thick brown pants and brown boots . He also wore black gloves and a flamethrower.

In the final version of the game, he now has protective goggles and his clothes are thinner, his scarf is now red and he wears a gray hat. He now has medium length gray hair and a stubble, his eyes are now blue and he now has a scar on his right eye.

The Wendigos[]

The Wendigos (At least Hannah) were shown to look like a zombie, with large prey and claws. In some scenes they have a vision almost similar to that of a human, in others they have a red vision.

In the final version of the game they had a vision based on movement. As for their appearance, it hasn't changed much, they are just more threatening expressions and their models seem to be a little thinner.

Chapters[]

Although the old version of the game had the same story as the final version, the characters' dialogues and some other things were different.

Chapter 1[]

The old version of Chapter 1 is not much different from the final version, only that Chris was sleeping near the cable car station and Sam finds him and wakes him up, saying that she thought he was dead.
